My elderly neighbour is trying to light her Hygena Classi Oven built in when she turns the knob to the required number no gas is coming out to light it.

Hello Jean;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service appliance technician.

There are several different components that may be at fault for this problem. The most probable is a bad gas ignitor. Your ignitor may either be broken or too weak to open the gas valve.

On built in wall ovens:
1.) Remove the oven door. Tilt it out to where is stays slightly open and lift straight up. When replacing the oven door make sure the hinges that the door mounts on are pulled slightly out to slide the door back on.
2.) Remove the cover on the bottom of the oven. You will see the gas burner and in the center of the back wall the gas ignitor.
3.) To replace the ignitor, you will have to remove the two plates below the ignitor.

Locate your oven model number. It is on a label either on the face of the oven after you open the door or on the side of the door.

Go into the internet and search; "Ignitor and your model number".

Make sure both your oven gas and electrical power are turned off before you do anything!

How do I lite the oven pilot

If it's an older model with a true pilot light you turn on the gas at supply line valve, open oven door, remove bottom panel to access pilot and burner. Sometimes it's easier to remove broiler drawer on these models but regardless take a lighter and light pilot. Most models are electronic ignitions which if you have it probably needs replaced if it doesn't ignite the burner in under a minute or minute and 15 secs. It could also be a bad thermostat if the burner ignites within the time period described above

Oven will sometime take an hour to get to temp after being turned on. any thoughts?

If your oven is older or you live near the water check if there is a build up of fine rust over the burners. A fine wire brush lightly run over the top of the burners may be your solution. Before you attempt this disconnect electrical power and turn off the gas supply. If you are mechanical remove the front lower cover by opening the doors, removing the two screws located in the top of the lower cover next to the door hinges. The cover will remove to the front. Next remove the screws holding the shield in fromt of the burners. A long handled fine wire brush will allow you to brush the top of the burners. If there is a film of fine rust it will not be apparent when looking. After careful reinstallation of the burner shield and ensuring there is a safe area away from the exposed electrical connections for you. Reconnect electrical power and gas to the oven temporarily. This will alow the unit to be operated enableing you to look past the pilot flame to see if the burner flames are even across the burners. Disconnect electric and gas supply from the unit prior toiInstalling lower cover. After complete reassembly reconnect power and gas and enjoy.

I have a small, 4-burner gas stove; no wondow in the oven door. I think my stove had a mouse infestation. I think the insulation above the oven has mouse urine in it; I can smell it, although there is no...

It is common for mice to get into the oven box insulation and nest. I had this problem before and its not likely you'll be able to get rid of the odor without replacing the insulation. Another issue is any fecal matter the mice leave behind. This can become a health hazard (expecially in an appliance that you use to prepare food). I would recommend replacing the insulation. If the model oven is correct, the insulation can be purchased for around $20 at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The part number will depend upon your COMPLETE model number (located on a nameplate around the oven door opening, or lower drawer opening (if equipped). On some models, the model number will appear on the back of the operator console. The first three sites on the list include exploded view parts illustrations to assist you with locating and properly indentifying any parts you may need. The insulation for the Magic Chef 31000 series is listed under the "Body" parts list.

To replace the insulation on MOST ranges, all you should have to do is lift the range top to access the oven box. The top on most ranges can be lifted by removing a series of screws that are usually holding it secure under the bottom of the front edge. You will need to open the oven door to see them. CAUTION: Do not lean on the oven door as this may cause damage to the door hinges and springs.

On the Magic Chef 31000 series, it appears that you will need to remove the burner control knobs, followed by screws holding the burner control control panel in place. You should also remove all the orifice covers and burner grates from the top of the range. Once the burner control is removed, remove the top panel, followed by the burner box top panel. The insulation will be wrapped around the oven box. It should just lift out. Depending on the potential infestation, you may want to wear a dust mask and use a vaccum to **** up any loose debris. CAUTION: Turn off the gas supply BEFORE attempting any repairs - if this is a gas range.

If you have questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

How do I change my whirlpool super capacity 465 from natural gas to propane

The documentation for Whirlpool appliances is available here: http://www.whirlpool.com/custserv/index.jsp . Enter the full model number from the oven rim inside the drawer. The installation guide will walk you through the conversion. However, it is recommended that a qualified technician (for LP, if going to LP) do the conversion. Most LP companies will have someone who can perform the conversion. The conversion kit should have come with the documentation for the range.

I've found one model of Super Capacity 465 with the model number SF325PEEQ0. The documentation is here: http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/product_literature/search_results.jsp?form_state=literatureSearch&context=&siteCd=WHRCOM&form_state=literatureSearch&searchTerm=SF325PEEQ0 .

The steps: Make sure the power cord is disconnected, the gas supply is turned off and the grates and burner bases are removed from the top burners. Open the broiler door and locate the regulator, remove the cap from the regulator and turn it over so that LP is visible. Reinstall the cap. Do not remove the regulator. Move the range out from the countertop (about 4") if it is in place. Slide a putty knife carefully between the cooktop and the oven compartment to locate one of the clips on the side 2 3/8" back from the front of the range. While gently lifting up on the cooktop surface, push in on the clip. Repeat on the other side. Prop up the cooktop and remove the Venturi plates. Then remove one orifice at a time from the cooktop, use a 3/8" combination wrench. Replace with the same colored orifice from the kit. Lower the cooktop and reinstall all of the burner bases and other parts. In the oven, use a 1/2" combination wrench to tighten the orifice hood down to the pin (2 to 2 1/2 turns). Do not overtighten. Finish installing the range except for sliding it into the final position and then check the burners. You may need to adjust the air shutter for each burner. With the burners off, remove the knobs. Open the oven door and remove three screws from the manifold panel. Pull the panel down and away from the range. With a small screwdriver, adjust the air shutters for each burner (clockwise to let in more air, counterclockwise to reduce the air). Replace the manifold and then the control knobs and check the burners. Start the oven heating and check the burner for it. There is another air shutter next to the regulator; adjust if needed.

I hope this helps.

Magic chef oven pilot light out

Hi, If the oven has a standing pilot too, Open the bottom door and locate the main burner. Follow the burner toward the rear of the oven and there will be a flame switch attatched to the burner. Hold the flame near the flame switch and the gas should ignite.
Some model do not have a standing pilot in the oven. Please get me your model number off the label located around the opening of the lower door so I can look this up and instruct you better.

Ignitor coil bad

Open the oven door and remove the two thumb screws located at the raer of the oven floor. Pull up on the floor from the rear and then out from the front flange. Set it aside. There may be a screw that secures the oven burner diffuser, remove it and remove the diffuser and set aside. You will now see the oven ignitor on the side of the burner. It is held in with two screws. Use a few drops of dish detergent to loosen the screws before you attempt to take them out. Remove the screws, disconnect the wiring terminal block and remove the ignitor. Reverse the procedure and you are good to go!

Jenn-air JJW9630CAS - double wall oven -door won't close, even after hinges replaced

On my double oven the bottom door was not closing by at least 21/2 inches the upper door would allow the light to stay on . Upon close examination this problem appeared to be the door was too low which did not allow the gasket to seat in the oven cavity, holding the door open. new hinges and receptors did not resolve this condition. This is how I corrected this condition. 1 open the doors one at a time and lock the hinges.2 remove the doors from the receptors (be careful they are heavy) and set aside. 3 remove mounting screws holding oven in cabinet. 4 slide oven forward enough to hold onto receptor sockets on left and right sides lower and upper 5 remove receptor sockets by removing the screws in front of oven(be careful to hold on to the receptor so it doesnt fall behind oven into cabinet)7 with a center punch punch a start point 1/8 inch above the existing screw holes and drill appropriate size hole for screw THE HOLES MUST MATCH UPPER AND LOWER RECEPTOR OR THE SCREWS ON THE LOWER DOOR WILL SCRATCH THE UPPER DOOR .8 attach receptors to oven in new holes 9 slide oven back into cabinet and replace screws removed in step three 10 attach doors into receptors and push locks forward into receptor cavity attach lower door first and check for operation then upper door open slowly and check enough clearance exists for the screws on the lower door miss the upper door . If more clearance is needed elongate the holes drilled earlier(repeat steps 1 through 5) and slide receptor up on upper door. NOTE The receptors are not in a sealed space in the oven cavity and are not exposed to any heat. Periodically check the screws for tightness. After performing this procedure Both doors close all the way and the light is no longer a problem Now 20 minutes cook time MEANS 20 MINUTES COOK TIME.
HOPE THIS RESOLVES YOUR PROBLEM !!!!!

Garland gas range

look at the bottom panel below the doors.on the left and right side youll see screws--remove them.open the doors and you should see 2 more screws.pull the panel out towards you.youll see the serial/model number on it or the frame of the oven.if the glow coil is red try to manually light the burner witha paper towel.if the burner lights, the burner may be obstructed --if not the gas valve may not be opening.you will need a voltage meter to test the coil on the gas valve.if you get the correct voltage on the valve coil which is 24 volts ac and no gas the valve is bad.if you dont have 24 volts the ignition board is bad.let me know.
