Vizio Quit Working

While I was watching the video I heard a noise (small pop or crack) and the video and sound went out. Now when I turn it on nothing happens - the remote does not work - no sound - no video. The touch controls on the front left corner do not work either.

IS THERE A RESET BUTTON AS THE PREVIOUS PERSON ASKED?

Thanks for the help. I am supposedly still covered by Costco on the TV so we will see if I let them repair it or just go buy a Sharp.

There are so many of the same type of problems for these damn Vizios, I am surprised there has been no class action suit filed against them and anybody that sells them.

This is the first time I personally have had a problem with a TV or monitor. My background is PC support and repair with a minor in programming. I have seen a lot of monitors blow in the workplace but those have been used and abused for the most part. Is it that difficult to replace the boards in a TV say compared to a PC?

  • aolah Jun 16, 2009

That makes sense. How long would the training be to fix this type of equipment and is there any good schools or the equivalent to get the training?

    Thanks,

    Drew

Hello, This is a problem with the power supply board, the pop you heard was a capacitor (it exploded). If you do not have a background in electronics, please have a qualified TV Technician repair the TV set. There are no user repairable parts in the unit. In any event the power supply board needs to be repaired. Thank you, Shuttle83 http://www.electron-age-technologies-llc.com

I know what you mean, you see most of the time the TV plays upto the end of the coverage. At that point you have no protection other then the purchase of an extended coverage plan, which I always strongly suggest. As a Certified Communications and Consumer Electronics Technician I am surprised that people accept the shoddy quality of TV sets, and wish someone would bring a class action suit against a lot of these companies, but that remains to be seen.

Actually the replacement of boards are simular, but the interaction is different. In PCs you can replace the sound card in a PCI slot with any PCI sound card or use that PCI slot for any PCI device, however in a TV there is no such interface standard and the connection by nature is proprietary. Add to this the fact that the two boards (main and aux) could contain a single circuit so the boards must match exactly, and one board can cause a problem on a nother board, that's why troubleshooting is necessary.

Training can take from 1 year to 2 years. One of the best schools for electronics and TV repair is the Cleveland Institute of Electronics which is a partial on-line and correspondence course. They do an excellent job on the teaching of electronics and their TV repair module is one of the best in the field. Now one you have the "book learning" down then you might want to get a job in a TV shop doing piece work (This is to get practical experience) for a year or two. Another option after getting in-school training is to work on the TV sets of friends and family, using your training material as reference books. Also join a group like www.wa6ati.com to help you diagnose and provide a sounding board for problems.

I HAVE REPAIRED THIS SAME ISSUE IN MY POLAROID TV. AS VIZIOS ARE MADE BY THE SAME COMPANY, I BELIEVE THIS REPAIR WILL BE SIMILAR. THE CAPACITORS ON THE POWER SUPPLY BOARD HAVE POPPED. THERE ARE PROBABLY 2 OF THEM. I DO NOT REMEMBER HOW THEY ARE LABELED, HOWEVER YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO LOOK FOR THE CAPACITORS THAT HAVE "BULGED" TOPS. DESODDER THEM FROM THE BOARD. REPLACE THEM WITH NEW ONES (I FOUND NEARLY MATCHING ONES AT RADIO SHACK). THEN SODDER THEM BACK IN. IT SEEMS COMPLICATED, BUT IF YOU HAVE USED A SODDERING IRON BEFORE, IT IS A BREEZE. FOR REFERENCE CHECK OUT THE SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM ON 37" POLAROID TV ON THIS SIGHT. THAT IS HOW I FOUND OUT.

I have a Vizio p50hdm while watching heard a pop noise and tv went out cant turn back on.I replaced main board and power board and still doesn't come on any Ideas?

The power amplifier chip (which goes "pop" when it goes bad) may be located on the board where the IR sensor is. Sometimes (but not always) you can make the TV come on by holding the power button in _until_ the TV comes on. But that usually only works when the chip is "going" bad. If you heard the pop, it's probably shot. Also, check for a fuse on _any_ of the boards, and possibly a main fuse at the back of the TV.

Check and replace the main power regulator board as card basis. It has damaged.

There's a good chance the pop you heard was a failing electrolytic capacitor (they POP when they blow sometimes) either in the power section or the inverter section or both.
Any caps in these sections that look bulged at the top, or bulged/leaking at the bottom (look for discoloration of the circuit board around the base of the capacitor) need to be replaced.
If you repeatedly turn it off and on, eventually it'll probably stay on, but every time you turn it off, the unit will get harder and harder to start up until one day it just won't.
Sometimes you have to do the opposite to start it up and unplug it for some time and then try again.

If you aren't tech savvy, don't worry, read the rest of this solution and watch the videos.

If you are handy with a soldering iron and can identify the power supply and/or inverter / FM section for the backlights, an inexpensive handful of capacitors will likely fix you right up.
Match the capacitance on the capacitors. Go over voltage if you can, and still have them fit.
IE - it's not a bad idea to replace a 10V cap with a 16V or 25V or even a 50V, but don't replace a 680uF cap with a 500uF or a 1000uF (unless you are SURE it's only doing supply output ripple filtering,
and even then, you should go OVER, not under the uF rating).

Most of the caps that go are 10V 1000uF or 3300uF.

I found some great videos of the procedure (for many Samsungs with the same issue) on youtube.

As you can see, this issue spans plasma TVs, as well as large and small LCD TVs and monitors, amplifiers, computer power supplies and motherboards, and other electronic equipment.
The parts are cheap, and skill required is minimal.
A great parts source is Digi-Key, and you can order the parts online at www.digikey.com
They typically cost under a dollar a piece plus a flat shipping rate.
The parts usually arrive one business day later.
If you watch the third video, you will see that even someone with no soldering experience can perform these repairs as demonstrated by the woman in the video.

Sounds like the lamp popped. If you can find a tech pub on how to take it apart, or are gullable enough to tear into it, the lamp should be found for around $150. Maybe less. But you can also get a new 32" for under $400 too.

I have a Vizio 50 Plasma TV. Sound works but display is "noise".

It'll be the X or Y boards or maybe the power board, without checking the VA and VS voltages I can't tell.

I have a Vizio P50 HDM and while watching it last evening I heard a loud pop and the picture went into a very noisy/distorted condition. Sound is OK. Any ideas?

That loud pop is your Y and Z sustainer. Normally it goes out completly but yours is still half working. Not usally fixable yourself, because you may need to flash the control board f/w , which is proprietary and can't be aquired unless you work for them,

Sound Problems with 32" Vizio HDTV

our brand new Vizio 32 HDTV has poor sound quality, so irritating in it's flat muffled character that I can't watch it. My electrical engineer husband as attempted to change it (he does not hear the difference between the Vizio and our two Sony...there is a BIG difference) by turning off the surround sound. But to me nothing has changed. What do you think? it sounds a little bit like an old radio or a broadcast from inside a closet. Hmmm
