To Whom It May Concern:
I have access to the same model you mention in your post. It was handed to me for repair and I did my best to track down a schematic for Toledo Scale model 8420. Coincidentally I happen to work in the same neighborhood that Mettler-Toledo is located and getting to their CSR was easy. Bad news is this same CSR who is what we in the industry call a "Lifer" didn't have any of the service documentation for this 25+ year-old scale.
Good news is I made a request to the original owner not to throw out the scale once I returned it. If you are interested in buying the scale "as-is" and salvaging the parts needed to solve your reset and 0000 problem, this may be your best opportunity. I don't know as of this writing what the original owner, a restaurateur, will ask for the scale but estimate it won't be much. These scales are industrial strength and this particular one is in great cosmetic condition.
Because I am new to Fixya and don't have the patience to set up an account presently, you will have to post your reply as you did for your initial question. I will check the site in a couple of days to see what has transpired and go from there.

You may not see a paper jam.
This may work for you, it has worked for many here I given this advice so gave it a try it could work for you. Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.
First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.
If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there.
And gave the rode that the ink slides on a good clean and maybe a bit oil on cloth and wipe the rod with it.
Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.
