Tempest i5000XT installation

I am trying to install a new sata HDD but the machine / windows 7 won't recognise the HDD. This is an old machine and this sata HDD is the only drive apart from the DVD RW. Are there any jumpers I need to set.

Do you have the disks to install the drive, it is blank so the machine will not see it. Use the back up disks to laod the systems operating program.

If you are installing Windows XP then -
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

Yes, it's compatible with the motherboard, no, it's not compatible with the XP install disk because it doesn't have SATA support. And since Asus doesn't provides it special driver needed (one that must be put on a floppy) it means that you simply cannot install XP on this disk.
All you can do is to obtain another PATA hdd what ever its size and install XP in it. Then put the new SATA disk in and use it to store all the installed programs and all your files on it. As a bonus you won't lose them if the new PATA disk fails or XP gets corrupted.
Or install Vista or 7 instead of XP, the have support for SATA disks

IF the hard drive is a SATA hard drive, you will first of all need to download the SATA drivers for te motherboard and copy them to a Floppy drive on another computer if yours will not work, this may also affect why it is not "seeing" the Cd drive if this is a SATA one too

Try installing Windows and when the message " press F6 if you want to ...." appears, have the floppy inserted in teh floppy drive so it can find thr SATA drivers, it will then recognise the Hard drive and install

If you have further problems please repost

Power Management Lenovo Energy Management Lenovo 4.3.1.2 2010-02-01 7.19 MB Windows 7 32bit Lenovo Energy Management Driver Lenovo 3.0.1.4 2009-03-24 3.86M Windows XP HI There,

Go Here:

http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_list.aspx?CategoryID=43

Go to the "Energy Management" heading and you'll find 2 different drivers. XP and W7. Be advised, RAID or 3rd Party SATA drivers are most often intended to be loaded onto an old fashioned floppy disk. You'll need to have an external floppy drive attached with the proper floppy you've made to make this work.

Also, VERY important. If you're loading the driver for an XP install, the floppy must have been made on/from an XP OS machine or XP Start-up will not recognise the driver.

Good Luck

You may need to address the way that the old HDD was used in the BIOS. Meaning that if you had regular IDE drive the setting that may be in the BIOS might need to bee disabled and that could be the cause to the new SATA IDE controller you have installed as a boot device. Also if you are trying to boot from you new SATA drive you will need to install some form of and operating system on it like windows or whatever you have been using.

Sometimes it’s easier to create a disk image of the old drive and transfer it to you new SATA, using a disk image utility like Norton Ghost.

Of course I am assuming that you are using a PC and not a MAC.
