Look at the bottom of the head that you wind and it will tell you the direction to rewind the new line. You can download a copy of the owners manual from

I have a trimmer that is 1 year old and the line will not feed.I have followed the instructions to the letter but it will not work.I hope you can help me.Thank you.

In my limited experience all but the very cheapest strimmers have a bump feed line head fitted. These aren't foolproof but I find them less bother and less difficult than the manual feed type.

The main consideration seems to be reassembly after winding the new line onto the spool. Most spools have helpful arrows for the winding direction but sometimes the spool will fit on the spindle either way and the position of the spring isn't always obvious. I have one and the spool is marked this side top. The obvious thing is not the right thing as they assume the machine is upside-down.

Once assembled a bump-feed line head should move against the spring with a firm hand pressure freeing the spool so the direction of travel feeds out more line. The correct line diameter is important. If the head will not move up to free the spool it is assembled wrongly or an accumulation of grass, weeds and nettles has fouled the operation and it should be cleaned and maybe lubricated a little.

Trimmer line runs out FAST

Check the spring tension, if the spring is weak, line can be fed out too quickly.

Lost owners manual, how do I advance the string

Hi don watts46...
Bump the rotating end of the trimmer on the ground while it is running and it will automatically feed the line out, the more you bump the more line feeds out.

Spool does not release line when tapped

You do not need to bump the head to advance the line. The machine has automatic line feed. If the line will not advance, then there is a problem with the line spool, possibly a tangle inside on it. Here is your instruction manual.

How to fix my Ryobi Wipper Snipper - Model# RLT30CD? Hi, I having been using the bump feed and all of sudden its not bump feeding. What should i do about fixing this up? Cheers Clint Baird

You may have dirt in the spool, keeping the line from feeding. Or, the string is slightly tangled on the spool, not allowing it to feed properly.

Bump n go feeder not working in petrol line trimmer every time the line gets shorter, bumping the base no longer releases more line and i have to undo the screw and physically feed more through.

It sounds like the string is not spooled correctly. Try re-spooling the string, ensuring the string will be able to freely move when the feeder is bumped.

Either that or you may be almost out of string and need to get more and re-spool.

You are pulling the trigger to make it spin while bumping, right? The bump-n-go action is based on centrifugal force.

My Balck&Decker Grasshog won't automatically feed line.

Just replace the LEVER, Item #29, Part #598435-00, for about $3.00 (B&D, Dewalt). Just pull old level straight out (pliers) and push replacement in. Level end expands to hold it in place. No other parts. Forget cleaning and replacement the spool, graphite or oiling... just replace the lever.

Weedeater quick snap line spool

the part you bump on the ground to feed new line unscrews but typically its left hand threads so you think you are tightening but actually loosening. once off the spool chould come out then you may can tap on the head with a hammer coaxing it to come off.

Echo trimmer with bump feed is not feeding

Sadly, they do wear out..... but sometimes they're just stuck. The line can refuse to feed if the line is caught on itself in the spool winding, or if the head is bad. Try this: remove the spool and clean it pretty good. Check that the line isn't caught on itself in the spool. Sometimes it just locks itself in between wraps, and you have to pull it out of the groove to get it to continue to feed. Give the inside of the spool a liberal dose of graphite powder. Put the spool back on with line. Bump it against the ground as much as you feel necessary to further distribute the graphite. Now, push the spool in as if to feed line, and pull on the line. It should feed a bit and stop. If it does, you're good to go. If not, replace the spool.
Best regards. Hope this was helpful to you, --W/D-- Please feel free to rate this solution! Thanx!

Homelite curved shaft timmer line problem

So, is this trimmer suppose to feed the string automatically? If not, then it sounds like the string is wound up on the spool the wrong direction.
