Question about Heating & Cooling
Coldstar split unit 12000 BTU works for like 30 mins then it shuts down and displays E4. I need to turn off and turn on for it to work another 30 mins until the same thing happens again. Does someone know how to fix it or where the problem may be??
E4 usually means either blocked capillary, low refrigerant charge, high ambient temperature.
First: check the filters. The front panel opens up like the hood of a car and the filters are fine plastic meshes that you should be able to see through. If you can't see through them that means they are clogged. pull them put and clean them with water only and replace. If the filters are blocked the unit will be unable to refrigerate properly.
Second: check the capillary (water outlet). If the hose is clogged, water usually backs up and sometimes the A/C will start dripping into the room. This also makes cooling defficient. Do NOT try to force water through the hose. Sometimes there is debris in it and you will just make the plug harder to remove. The way to remove it is by sucking the water back, not pushing it forward. A technician should be able to do this for you. The other possibility is that the other end of the "hose" (on the outside) is clogged or under water. Just remove the obstruction.
Third: the ambient temperatre is too high and your BTUs are not sufficient to cool the space. In other words, your A/C is not big enough for the amount of heat/size of the room.
Fourth: have the refrigerant level checked by a qualified technician. They can refill the refrigerant. They have all the tools required.

Testimonial: "Thank you. I had the unit serviced, so filters are clean, no water clogged on hose, and the a/c is big enough since it worked well for a year. When it was serviced, the technician topped up the refrigerant cause it needed it but it still didn't solve the problem and wanted to have an idea before calling the same or another technician."
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

It's 'possible' but not likely that you need additional freon.
What is more likely is the 'filter' (for inside coil) is dirty and possibly the coil itself - and/or - the outside coil is dirty.
I would check out the filter - if dirty - I would change it and would also inspect the inside coil. If it's also dirty I would clean it the best I could (with a brush of some sort).
I would also check the outside coil and clean it if need be.
Hope this helps.

You want to look up Guangdong Chigo who are the manufacturers of this unit. They have a list of error codes/service manuals etc on their site.... From the PDF:
"1、Check whether the operation current and power of the unit is abnormal. 2、Check whether the speed and wind quantity of the fan is normal, otherwise replace the outdoor fan or capacitance 3、 Check whether the surface of the condenser is too dirty, and it should be cleaned when it is too dirty. 4、Check whether the unit is short of the refrigerant, add the refrigerant after leakage detection and repair welding. 5、 Check whether the sensor and electric control board is normal, otherwise replace the board."
