You are probably out of luck as the manufacturers usually don't sell any parts for lower-cost shredders. I would see if Office Max has a repair or trade-in program.

If you expect to repair this, expect to spend weeks waiting for parts if you can get them at all, at least an hour to do the work and expect to spend 2/3 the price of a new one for the parts.

My advice, my friend, save the collection can, discard the shredder. On your new shredder, dont over feed it.

Thanks

Indicates jam. Why won't it move forward or reverse?

Some material that can't be shredded is lodged in the mechanism. The drive motor may have sensed thermal overload and stopped working either permanently or until the shredder is unclogged. Obviously, you will have to get access to the grinding mechanism and (with power disconnected) remove the jamming material bit by bit.

Paper jam

Does it sound like the motor is spinning? or does it sound like the motor is bound up? I ask because if it sounds like the motor is spinning, then chances are good you stripped a plastic gear somewhere in the drive system that feeds the steel shredder. I just pulled apart one of these and saw that the motor has a steel gear on it. that steel motor gear meets with a plastic gear, and then the plastic gear meets with steel gears attached to, and which spin the shredder. So if you ever bind the shredder with too much paper, the steel motor gear will grind the teeth right off the plastic gear and it won't spin anymore. If your motor sounds like it's bound, then the good news is that the gears aren't stripped. You'll have to take the shredder apart so you can remove the paper causing the problem. Of course unplug it first before opening it up. They are not overly complex but just remember where the screws goes so you put them back in the right holes.

Shredder making a squelling noise

Royal shredders have a nylon worm drive gear that is designed to loose teeth rather than allow an overload to damage the whole gearbox. When the motor's worm drive hits an area where teeth have been removed it screams because it is no longer loaded!

This part can be replaced if you are handy with fixing mechanical devices and know how to safely do so. Spare internal parts can easily and quickly be ordered from Royal by calling 1-800-222-2310. I find their support people to be outstanding.

The cog below is shattered on the spindle and the bottom one, the skew spindle has chewed a hole in the cog in one place. I would like them all replaced with bronze.

This is the most common problem...people put TOO MUCH paper in shredders... the VF880 has plastic gears inside...having done this a number of times you may have broken the gears or stripped the "teeth" off the gears...open it up to see what damage has been done; once you know what is broken you can contact Royal for pricing and parts at 1-800-524-0799.

Inside the motor assembly there are a series of nylon cogs , a large one of which interacts with a metal one.  This is the most likely place you have one or two teeth missing from the large nylon cog that drives the shredder blades.

Only solution - Don't buy a FELLOWES shredder.
It is ludicrous that they cannot (will not) supply a spare gear wheel when there are thousands of instances of them failing. Or even think outside the box - fit metal ones?
