Can the glass of a whirlpool cerano hob suddenly crack?

You didn't need 'red hot' to simmer. When you got it red hot, and then put the pan on it, the pan sucked the heat out of the ring to fast, and caused stress in the glass causing it to crack. Tops are meant to be used the way you used it. Your fault I am afraid.

The top can be replaced.

I have an LG glass cook top stove. It is just 3 years old. While cooking pancakes on a flat pan, the top cracked down the middle..what could have caused this

Only a couple things would cause this First if it is to tight in the opening. Next is there was a small crack on the edge somewhere and when it heated up or the slightest vibration expanded it similar to a small chip in a windshield that grows over time. This could easily happen during installation if not being very careful. And finally is a defect in the material, This is probally unlikely but possible look at the glass very carefully for flaws. If you find any see if LG will repair for free.

My amana model AKT3040 is making a loud "pow" when i turn it on with a white flash under the glass, then the breaker trips. It is 6 years old this month, not under warrenty, Should i try to get a repair...

Amana will confirm this - but I am fairly sure that the elements under the glass are replaceable. Most units by other manufacturers are repairable...but if yours is not, then careful shopping around will save a ton on parts cost.
Labor will vary by market...but it is typically better to have the replacement part when contacting a repair service.

Oh, yes, the snap is a broken burner element. the breaker trips because the resistance on a shorted element is insufficient - and the current draw becomes excessiver - popping the breaker.

I was cooking popcorn on my glass cooktop and the pan appears to have scratched to surface.

You may have melted the bottom of the pan you were using into the glass. Copper bottom and alum pans sholdnot be used at high temps on a glass top. (never use porclin or glass pots)High temps can etch(mark or discolor) the glass.

Kitchenaid 36" glass cooktop with small crack

A small crack, turns into a big crack, Short of ordering a new piece of glass, there is no "fix" sorry. YOu can continue to use it, but eventually it will run across the cook top, and then shatter the glass... Better be safe than sorry.
