I have dismantled a GO700 with a good screen but faulty with a faulty board. I was about to replace the board with good one from a GO700 with a cracked screen. I wondered if it was easier to just replace the screen but can't readily see how to. The worst part of the dismantling is the aluminum tape which cocoons the GPS.

Call the service dealer , he can pull out screen and put it to the working one. You can get the new screen from ebay also. It will cost you around $20.

Hi,

There is a website that shows you how to replace GPS screens, parts are usually availabe on www.ebay.com. The repair tutorial is a : GPS Repair Guide. This third party repair service for GPS devices will charge you about 50% of a new one.

Take a look inside your tomtom go . The photo's uploaded are of the GO and Go 300 / 500 / 700 replacing the screen - 10676aa.jpgseries so yours might not look exactly the same but will be similar to these. SEE PHOTO of the IC's highlighted RED. U24 is on the same side of the circuit board as the card reader. U25 is on the same side of the board as the power socket. These are the 2 chips / IC's that will be blown if reversed supply or more than about 6 volts has been applied. The blown components are usually blown due to attaching the WRONG charger or a faulty charger. ( the tomtom cigarette lighter leads often go faulty ) These IC's are very very small ( just 3.5mm across ) and the 10 pins ( 5 on each side ) are even smaller and very close together therefore normal soldering ability will not allow a novice to replace them. Special soldering irons are needed , magnifying glass or special microscope for electronics + a steady hand and good light. Its highly unlikely that a home repair is possible. Besides that , even engineers with years of soldering experience have great difficulty replacing these components and it often takes me 30 minutes just to replace one of these IC's and I have a steady hand. Most normal electronics repair companys cannot repair this type of component as they will normally deal with bigger things. So unfortunatly, your "corner of the street" TV repair shop won't be able to fix it for ya either. As far as I know TomTom don't repair these IC's either as its too fiddly and time consuming and for them not worth the effort. Your only hope is one of the repair people offering this service on online . Try a look on ebay under "faulty tomtom" .

Replacing the board will cost $500+.

Therefore I would go for the Screen replacement.

Thanks for contacting Fixya.

How difficult is it to replace the screen window?

About 45 minutes and its a bit fiddly. Bought original screen off EBay £42. Remove battery and SD card. Remove 3 screws from back plus 2 from metal strap bracket, 1 from bottom and 2 more from top button trim. Gently prise camera apart. Loosen 2 screws and slide out screen retainers. Remove Screen backing plate. Remove screen gently pull ribbon wire from camera body. Push new screen ribbon wire into socket - this IS fiddly but you must get it aligned right. Push into place with a plastic spatula - fit screen and protector and re-assemble. All you need is a watchmakers Phillips (+) head driver. Good luck.

Cracked screen how to replace it

This is a very fragile job and requires special handling of the screen. The screen has to be removed from a metal frame which has a lot of screws around it they have to be re tighted properly or it will cause the new screen to crack. This is really a expensive process and usaully not worth the cost of repairs on this model.

Broken laptop screen

There is nothing more frustrating than a broken laptop screen. Whether you have dropped your laptop or stepped on it,once the screen is cracked it has to be replaced. Having the screen repaired may cost you almost as much as a new laptop. Purchasing a new screen from the manufacturer can also be expensive. Taking the time to look online at computer message boards or resellers can help you to find a reasonably priced screen. By following a few easy steps, you can replace your cracked screen and have a functioning laptop in an afternoon.

Determine what model laptop screen will fit your laptop. Ordering a screen directly from the manufacturer can be almost as expensive as buying a new laptop. Look at online computer message boards, auction sites and retailers to find less expensive options. Disconnect any power source, including the battery pack, from your laptop before you begin. Locate and remove the four to six screws that hold the bezel, or plastic frame cover, in place. The screws sometimes have small plastic or rubber covers over them. Pull the plastic bezel away from the screen cautiously, working around the edge. Some bezels snap in and out of place. A small flat-head screwdriver may be helpful in prying the edge of the bezel away from the screen. Pull the screen forward gently. You will find two main wires behind it. The ribbon-like wire, or video cable, is usually taped in place. Remove the tape and disconnect the video cable from your broken screen. Remove the broken screen from its metal frame. Connect the new screen to the video cable and pop it into the metal frame. Replace the tape, plastic frame and screws. Power up your computer and test your new screen. Hope this helps.

I need to remove & replace the LCD screen from my Sony Vaio VGN FZ-410E. It fell and the screen cracked. Where do I start?

1) Start with removing ALL power to the laptop. Remove the AC adapter (Charger) and Battery.

2) Observe Anti-Static Precautions.
Your body carries Static electricity. Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

With a desktop computer you merely touch the metal frame of the open computer case.
(Computer unplugged from power, if you leave in the middle of working on the computer, be SURE to touch the metal frame upon your return, BEFORE touching the computer again)

With a laptop no such luck. Everything metal in the laptop is non-magnetic, therefore non-ferrous.
The best advice is to wear an ESD wrist strap, (About $5 bucks), and connect it's alligator clip to a good ground source.

Next best is to at least touch a metal doorknob before working on the laptop, or touch a large metal object sitting on the table. (Or workbench)
(Metal object such as large serving plate, or metal knickknack, perhaps)

Granted we are discussing replacing a laptop LCD screen, but play it safe, observe Anti-Static Precautions.

3) You need,
A) A small, and medium Philips screwdriver. (No.1 and No.2)
B) A pair of needlenose pliers would be handy.
C) Strip of wide tape, or a multi-compartment container.

The strip of tape, or the multi-compartment container, is for the various screws you will remove. Some look VERY close to each other, but are NOT.
Do Not mix them up!

(Put a screw in the wrong hole, and the screw could seize halfway in. No putting it all the way in, or getting it back out without Severe damage. At the very least you'll strip the threads off of the screw, or the threads in the hole)

A clean egg container can be substituted for the multi-compartment container.
Label each egg holder for the area the screw/s come out of.

Or;
Tape wrapped into a loop, one side stuck to a piece of cardboard, label the cardboard next to the area on the tape where the screw will be.

This video is show you the removal steps. It is for a Sony Vaio VGN FZ180E, but you'll find the LCD screen removal is similar.

Digital camera screen broken

A cracked screen will cost you, but maybe not as much as you think. Instead of replacing the whole , you can spend about $300 and replace the screen yourself. All you need is a small screwdriver.

1)Turn off the power to your screen and unplug all cables connected to it.
2)Remove the battery, if one is installed.
3)Locate the covered screws around the cracked screen. Remove the rubber/plastic covers, then unscrew the screws.
4)Gently remove the plastic frame around the cracked screen and set it aside.
5)Disconnect any power cords or cables going into the LCD screen.
6)Remove the cracked screen and slide the new screen into place. Replace any tape or plastic fasteners that hold it in place.
7)Reconnect all internal cords to the screen.
8)Screw in the frame and replace all the screw covers.
9)Reconnect the power supply and all external cables to the LCD screen and switch it on.

Repalce Door handle on GE Profile model number SCA1000DBB03

There're some half a dozen or so small screws securing that frame to the door face. These screws must be removed. Then, the frame can be pried out by releasing the plastic snappers (with a flat screwdriver) while in the same time gently helping the frame to detach from these snappers' hold and the door face. It's a tidious, somewhat annoying task. The snappers may and will even likely break in the process, but aren't needed for the frame to be resecured to the door face after the handle is replaced. Note that the broken ends of the handle must be held with a pair of pliers or a flat screwdriver needs to be inserted bewteen each of them and the hole, or the ends will turn with the screws. This is because the metal screws' grip of the plastic handle broken ends is very strong and will otherwise won't get separated.Once the above is accomplished, reassembling the door is a brease.

P.S.: The dual end latch may interfere somewhat with the job and can be removed for the prtocess to be undertaken without it disturbing. It's easy to remove and replace that latch, including its spring.

Change Faulty/Cracked touchscreen on P900

The screen consist of two parts: touchscreen(TS) itself and LCD screen. They're attached mechanically, not with glue or solder.
TS glued to metal frame and by mean of this frame(mechanically) attached to LCD(like shoebox cover) - you can see pits on side.
1. With sharp blade of razor or scalpel gently remove this frame with TS glued on top.
2. Then remove TS from the frame (I simply broke it and removed glass pieces from the frame)
3. Clean the frame with alcohol to remove glue and grains of glass.
4. Glue new TS to the frame at ONE SITTING!
5. Wipe out dust from LCD and inner surface of TS and attach the frame.
6. Buy conducting glue and connect 4-contacts of TS cable with LCD cable. Put adhesive tape over them to maintain electric connection.
That's all.
