Hello! Everytime I start my Whirlpool microwave, it makes a loud crackling noise and I'm worried it's going to start sparking. Is there any way to fix this issue, or is it shot?

The cracking spound is the spark jumping. so if there is spark please do not switch on unless you have confirmed the fault. It is possible that the Magnetron is leaking and sparking to the ground. As you have mentioned it was stored, it is quite possible that insect can get into the oven and create soft spots. When you switch on these will create a short and make the voltage jump and in the long run damage the magnetron.
So Remove cover after disconnecting , check for dirt/moisture in the cabin, if so wipe clean and dry, check the magnetron and area clean and use an jet air to clean off.
Now keeping clear switch on , use a cup of water inside to test.
If you notice any sparks shut off as the magnetron or the main HT capacitor can be faulty. replace with same type.
If there is heating without any issues , you can use the microwave safely

Microwave has sparks when you turn it on

Be very carefull because a microwave stores a deadly charge. Most of the time a rodent or roach has shorted the terminals on youe capacitor. Please refer this matter to a tech for repair because of the danger

Cooktop/Countertop lights will not turn off

Whirlpool told you wrong. Part number is #4158940 is a door switch, but that's not the problem.

They'll sell you parts or refer you to a local servicer, but they won't help you repair your unit.

On this particular model, the solid state relay PH1 near the bottom right corner of the board will be the culprit.

We regularly repair such control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week with a one-year guarantee.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Whirlpool Microwave

The magnetron has failed and has damaged the waveguide. This type of failure is generally unrepairable. First look in your owners manual for specific warranties, then contact Whirlpool and explain to them what has happened.
