Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

I have a PS3 80g. No warranty. Trying to repair myself. The disc drive wont take in discs. So I think I just need to replace the drive. But I need one that will be backwards compatible. I'm not sure how to find one. Or if there is a certain kind or modle I need for it to work with my 80g? Any ideas?

Http:// this site should provide some of the information you need. however, for a PS3 to be back compatable, it has to have had a PS2 built into it. changing the drive may not give it back compatability.

PS3 does not read any discs after replacing the lens

I uh, recommend doing nothing by yourself. Especially repairing the YLOD (did you use a hair dryer?) can fix board and disc reader issues.

Or go here and ask them what they think:

CD drive will not read my discs and does not recognize cd in drive.

Try to run a head cleaner on your laptop drive CD/DVD drive. After cleaning if it still does not read any discs, then it probably time to replace it.

It won't play any discs at all. It accepts the disc and shows the disc loading icon in top corner. Then does nothing at all. It worked fine 2 weeks ago. But now nothing.

I don't think this is a problem that you can tackle at home. There are two home remedies that may help the problem, at least for a little while, but ultimately, I think that it's going to have to be sent in for repairs.
1. You can remove your Hard Drive (HDD). BE WARNED! Only do this if your console is out of warranty! If it is still under warranty, doing this will VOID the warranty. On the left side of your console is a small door. this door will lead you to the HDD. You'll need to take out the blue screw, first. All you're going to do pull it out, then immediately re-insert it. This action may be of some help.
2. Re-formatt the HDD. With a solid red light showing, hold down both the power & eject buttons. You're going to hear a single beep, then a double beep. Once you hear the double beep, release both buttons. You'll get a message on your TV saying "connect your controller using USB". Following all the instructions will lead you to a 6 item menu. You are going to choose number 3. If that option doesn't work, pick number 6. BE WARNED!!! Number 6 will delete ALL of your saved memory! I know that really sucks, but this may be the only way to save your console short of repair. You can "back-up" your saved data using a "USB storage device" Like a memory stick or even your iPod.
If none of this works, or the console won't let you do the "double button" thing, it'll need to be repaired. You can contact PSR repairs at They are really great! They do both warranty & non-warranty repair work for a very decent price. I hope I helped. Good luck, Darryl

My xbox 360 will not read any disks

It is prob your laser needs replaced, you can try a cd lens cleaner (this gave me another month or so out of my last lazer) The clicking noise is the drive trying to read the disc, are you trying to load backups or original discs?

My X box wont play anything..... it says ''unplayable disc''

The DVD rom is probably on its last legs.  Call support and see what they can do for you.  I don't think this is covered under the extended warranties, and it will probably cost you money to fix if its is out of warranty.
Mine did this to me and I am in the middle of trying to repair it myself.
My suggestion is put it in a enclosed cabinet so that it overheats and redrings so you can send it back.
