Why did the router ID change when I linked it via the Wps button to the DSTV wifi gadget ?

Here's and excerpt from the Netgear WNR2000 user manual explaining that this is normal behavior for Netgear routers that support WPS..:
  • Keep Existing Wireless Settings. This check box is automatically selected after WPS is enabled to prevent unwanted settings changes, and is also selected if you have already specified wireless security settings or your SSID without using WPS. When this check box is not selected, adding a new wireless client using the push button or the Add WPS Client screen (see "Push Button Configuration" on page 2-14) changes the router's SSID and security passphrase. You might need to clear it if you are using certain registrars, such as for a Windows Vista PC, to configure the router through WPS.
Even if your router is not a WNR2000, it is likely that the configuration interface pretty much the same so you might be helped by looking at Chapter 2 page 17 in the WNR2000 manual here..:
Or else, go to Netgear support (NETGEAR Support Welcome), select Wi-Fi routers and download/display the user manual pdf and search it for "disable router's pin" or "keep existing wireless settings" and verify/change the setting so the router doesn't make changes when you use the WPS button.

What is WPS button?

The WPS is abbreviation for Wi-Fi Protected Setup. This function should you help to set up strong wireless network password (so called "shared secret") by very easy way.
For most of users is very hard to create, remember and assign complex long password to Wi-Fi router and client devices e.g. smart phones, laptops, printers.
Short and simple (non-complex) password is weak and can be broken by hackers. You can set strong password using WPS buttons. No device management access is required.

Procedure description
Press WPS button on both devices you wish connect each other. (Router, wireless printer...)Wait until password is set automatically and devices are connected. There exists second procedure in WPS standard. It is similar to described one, but PIN number is required in addition.

Security warning!!!
Enabled WPS function is very high security risk. The WPS sets strong password, but offers another security hole to hackers. The WPS standard is affected by well known vulnerability and therefore is insecure. It is recommended to DISABLE WPS ON ALL DEVICES. Go to device setup and disable the WPS completely.

Where is WPS button?

WPS means Wi-Fi Protected Setup is a network security standard that attempts to allow users to easily secure a wireless home network.

The standard allows up to four usage modes aimed at a home network user adding a new device to the network: The two most common are

PIN method, in which a personal identification number (PIN) has to be read from either a sticker or display on the new wireless device. This PIN must then be entered at the "representant" of the network, usually the network's access point. Alternately, a PIN provided by the access point may be entered into the new device. This method is the mandatory baseline mode
Push button method, in which the user has to push a button, either an actual or virtual one, on both the access point and the new wireless client device.

So routers not necessarily have a PHYSICAL button; actually modern routers have no WPS button. It can be a "vitual" button you access at setup.

Don't use WPS; some hackers can get is in MINUTES. Routers admit the use of WPA2 encryption which should offer you REAL protection against hacking

Where is the was button

I'm guessing you mean the WPS button - "Wireless Protected Setup" - As far as I can see from the User Guide this router doesn't have an actual WPS Button - You need to log onto its admin web interface and browse to the WPS setup page - Press the WPS button on your client device (laptop, printer, etc) then Click the WPS button in the router's web interface and let them talk to each other to establish a secure connection - The WPS light on the Front Panel should then light up when connected - You can find a user guide at the following url:

CALL YOUR ISP FIRST.
wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a standard for easy and secure wireless network set up and connections. Some of NETGEAR's products use the name Push 'n' Connect for WPS. To use WPS, your product must support WPS and be compatible with WPA security. WPS can automatically set up a random network name (SSID) and strong WPA wireless security for wireless routers, access points, computers, adapters, Wi-Fi phones, and other electronic devices. WPS lets you use a push button or enter a personal identification number (PIN) instead of manually entering a network name (SSID) and password:
  • Push button. The WPS button is either on the product or a clickable button on a wizard or utility screen.
