SOURCE: no boot sector on internal hard drive

If the bios or setup utility can't detect your hard drive then this can be a physical problem. I suggest that you reseat or tighten the cable connecting your hard drive to the motherboard. You need to open the hard drive panel then unplug and replug the hard drive cable.

SOURCE: no boot sector on internal hard drive. No bootable

Hi there,

A boot sector is a sector of a hard disk that contains booting programs stored in the other part of the hard disk. You boot sector might have been deleted or corrupted and you can't logon until you repair or recover the boot sector. To do this you must have your OS cd. Boot from OS cd the follow below steps...

Windows Vista
1. Insert the installation disc.
2. Restart your computer
3. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
4. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
5. Click Repair your computer.
6. Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.

7.

On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

Boot from you hard disk then you're done!

It does sound like the hard drive has died but the only sure fire way to check that is to remove it and try it from a proper PC using a cheap 2.5" enclosure.

If a normal PC can read it then it is more likely to be the hard drive controller on the motherboard which can be an expensive repair.

You can always get another drive if yours is pooched and you are not limited to the same size, You could get a larger one

You will however need an operating system.

Go here and choose operating system. skip the first bit about backing data up. You should have an Operating sytem CD and a driver/diagnostics CD.

SOURCE: Won't turn on

No bootable device usually means that your hard drive has failed. It is either not connected properly to the computer or the drive needs to be replaced.

No boot sector on internal hardware

There are several causes for this. First make sure the Bios recognizes the Hard Drive as the Primary Hard Drive. Second, double check to be sure the drive is properly seated and connected . If these are both done and set properly your drive has either been erased or lost it's master boot record due to a Virus or Error. You can try using the Windows recovery system to recover the boot sector but I would simply use system recovery and format the drive and reload it to factory specification.

The computer cant find a bootable device. Either your boot sector on your Hard drive is gone/damaged (most likely a virus) or the Hard drive failed. Start with booting with your windows disk and try to do a repair installation.

You need to run your installation/restore CD/DVD that came with the Dell. If you do not have them, you can order them from Dell for a nominal amount.
