I have an old 028 stihl av super electrical quickstop have rebuilt the carb on it put new gas new spark plug is turning over but not starting please help Dan from NY

due to age , id start by seeing if it has any spark in plug , remove plug wire and insert 1/4 bolt , arrange near by a metal bolt or other item (not handle ) and do not hold bolt near item
turn ign switch on (don't bother with choke) and pull engine over several times , observe 1/4 bolt for blue sparks (dim lights if necessary )
no spark present , trouble shoot ign system farther
spark present - remove and clean plug with good solvent
add a little bit of engine start fluid to plug hole and reinstall plug and wire , attempt to start engine , nothing - compession problem or shorted plug if it sputters but doesn't start then its a carb problem , troubleshoot carb (clean it )

Hi I did a tune up ,changed and checked every thing I done ..too I changed the oil ,oil filter ,gas filter air filter ,got a new battery changed the plugs there new too...even a new belt new key ...but...

Spark and gas??? Must have both. Pull spark plug wire and check for spark. If you have spark, check gap on spark plug. Check the bowl on carburetor. loosen bowl screw to see if gas is coming out. If you have gas coming out, carb needs to be taken off and cleaned or rebuilt.

Have a lawnboy 10685,changed spark plug, air filter, just had carb rebuilt and still only runs for a short time the dies, what could be the problem

you need to find out whether it is a fuel or ignition problem, I might suggest that when it quits pull spark plug and ground it to head and pull the rope like you are starting and see if you have spark, if no spark, then I would say your coil is bad, once it gets warm, it quits.....good luck

Briggs and Stratton 6.5 hp won't start- not sure gas is getting to the spark plug, just overhauled the carb, changed oil and new spark plug

First you could make sure you have spark. Take the plug out and then plug it into the black wire. Set the end of the spark plug near the frame of the lawn mower. Pull the cord one time to see if there is an arc from the plug to the mower. If you have spark, I would put the plug back in. Before putting the plug back in I would spray a little bit of starting fluid. See if it will fire up with the starting fluid in there. If you have a true good spark, it should fire up. This may be enough to get some gas going in there as long as you have the lines hooked up correctly.

Mercury 4hp had a spark when I used starting fluid. Engine wasn't getting a fuel flow so I rebuilt the fuel pump and cleaned all the junk out of carb bowl. Tried to start engine and there was no spark....

The magneto or pickup coil could have been affected by the spray. When the motor turns the pickup coil reads the flywheel and produces the electricity for the coil. You may have rust on that part and the magnet in the pickup could be covered with oily rust. Test electric components and sand rust off.

Dont start

pull the electrical plug off the fuel injector and use a voltage meter or a little side marker bulb from a light and put in the plug crank the car over if the voltage does not go up or the bulb does not light then the moduel on the bottom of the coil pack is fried and needs replaced to get power to the fuel injectors good luck hope this helps

Gas powered ryobi trimmer will not start

Hi
I found that the plug that came with my unit had an intermittent fault (sparked sometimes, then not all) definately the plug in my case. And yet at first, seemed to start OK, progressively got worse.

OK so youve changed the plug! Now check for spark....Can you see the spark if you pull the cord a few times
(you have to unscrew the plug from the head but leave it connected to lead & rest the plug against the metal cylinder surface using a pair of pliers to steady it and so you dont get a small shock)

If youre getting visable spark when you pull the cord, suspect fuel feed blockage from carb, Test by: Prime the bulb & turn to full choke, pul the start cord, Is there petrol vapour/odour present within the cylinder with the spark plug removed.

Check also gauze air filter behind the roto choke knob is clear, on/off switch (could be damp wd40) Test compression put your finger over the open plug port, plug starter cord, should be a little pressure build up

Hope this helps
please rate my comments - thanks
