Question about Tools & Hardware - Others

Planer Rattle My Delta 22-540 12" ''portable'' table top planer has started making a noise like a tumple-dryer containing a handfull of pebbles. Doing this even when no stock being fed thru - obviously more audible then. Bought it second hand a week ago. Used 3 times. Yesterday the noise started but went away. Now there all the time. Today gave it a good clean & lubes according to manuf instructions. Checked the rollers & blades. Could it be something in the motor?

    Thanks, Guru.
The speed of responses on this site are really impressive - guess its what makes a good site - good members caring about the others.
And Guru no 1 for me.
I have to admit that my first thoughts were related to something jammed and/or loose nuts.
I did a good cleanout this afternoon with compressor & toothbrush & tightened everything I could find after stripping off covers.
Tomorrow (or maybe later in the week as is WORK 2m) I will give another check for loose bits, jammed bits and a triple check on that belt. Past 9pm here, so will not be back in the garage tonight.

Replace the drive belt

Do you mean replacing the cutter head drive belt?

With power off start the ribbed belt on the motor pulley, insert allen wrench into cutter head shaft. slowly rotate cutter head while feeding belt onto cutter head pulley. While rotating head, alternate between pulleys feeding it on one rib at a time. Softening the belt in hot water is NOT necessary to install the belt in this fashion.

My On /Off Switch needs to be replaced. I can not find a listing for this part. I have a 12" Portable Planer Modle 22-540.

Do you have a Delta 22-540 12" portable planer? If this is the correct make and model, then Sears Parts Direct has the parts you need in stock. Delta has issued a substitute part for the original.

The switch is part 159 here: . The key of the switch is part 160. Other sites also have the switch under the new part number.

I hope this helps.

The planner nips the end of the board

My planer does the same thing.

1) I don't make the final cuts on my boards until after planing.

2) I discovered why the planer does this. I don't have a planer table. I use the two metal stands that came with the planer, and they don't really hold the board flat & steady like a planer table would. The planer has 2 rollers >>> one roller is on the feed-end and one roller is on the finished-end. When the end of the board goes past the feed-end roller, it is no longer held flat by two rollers. The weight of the board causes the board to tip up into the planer blade on the last 3 inches. So sometimes I just hold up the end of the board as it finishes ... but it still takes a nip out of the board now and then.

Up-vote if the information helped you. Thanks for the feedback.
