Your machine is set to "Announce" mode. You want it in "Answer" mode where it takes messages. Enter the model of your VTech 5.8GHz system into the search box at http://www.vtechphones.com/support/general/manuals to download a copy of the manual to see how to switch modes.

You have unheard messages on the voicemail system provided by your telephone company. This system records messages when someone calls while you're already on the phone.

Please contact your telephone company for instructions on accessing their voicemail system.

Problem detected with this unit on the display won't function

Did it "seem" unbalanced, or "sound" unbalanced. Can you turn the unit on and then get the fault message, or is system locked in fault? You can download the manual at:

http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SpecPage&Sku=WPGT9360EPL

Look through the troubleshooting section and see if it can answer your questions. Also, warranty information is located in the manual as well ;-)

Phone won't let me answer calls

Your answering machine may be set to answer only. Refer to manual to correct this. You need to set the machine to answer on whatever ring you choose. Turn off answering machine to receive calls until you rectify the issue.

"A" displayed and will not record caller's message

Your answering machine is set to "announce." In this mode it can announce that you're not available to take the call but will not record a message. The machine automatically switches to this mode when its memory is full.
If the memory is not full, you can switch from the "announce" mode to the "answer" mode by pressing the [ANSWER ON/OFF] button until it lights up in red.

My Radio Shack Digital Telphone Answering Device TAD-3829 worked well for a little over a year. However a few days ago I discovered that I cannot receive incoming calls anymore; on the callers side there...

These 3829's do that often. After about 1 year or so of use, something fails internally, resulting in the symptom you see. Sometimes you get "Er" on the display, or the machine simply won't pick up and answer the call.
Bottom line - this model's not very good. Ditch it.

Radio shack 43-3829 answering machine

Well, your machine might be broken, or you haven't set the little switch on the unit to ANS. The switch is on the side of the machine where the cables come out. But here are the instructions from the manual:

Recording Outgoing Messages:

Your answering machine has a built-in outgoing message, "Hello, please leave a message after the tone." You can use this message or record your own.

1. Hold the ANNC/DAY/<<, and speak clearly into the microphone, no more than 10 inches away.

2. Release the ANNC/DAY/<< when you finish. Your answering machine beeps and automatically plays back your recorded message.

*Your outgoing message must be between one and 60 seconds.

*If you record your won message but wish to revert to the pre-recorded message, press DELETE during playback of your outgoing message.

Make sure answer machine function is turned on. Bottom right button.
Make sure an outgoing message is set. Should see a <-> arrow in the display screen. If not, press the <-> button. To record outgoing message... the press the middle button; record out going message; press middle button. Wait a few seconds and you should be set. Hope this helps
