Question about Standard (CRT) Televisions

2 Answers

Samsung TV I am a UK(London) resident.I purchased the below mentioned tv in sept. 2004. From early 2006 the picture is periodically displaying slightly diagonally running lines across the screen from top right side to the left bottom- the colour of lines generally slightly green; as channels are changed they become white. Often, after a while, the screen starts becoming brighter until it becomes snowy white and the picture gives a hint of collapsing from the right and the left into the centre into a thin line running from centre-top to centre-bottom -this has actually happened on a few occassions. In between all this the picture has been quite normal. Recently, I called a engineer and despite the fact that he charged me £50 the problem has not dis-appeared. He has ruled out a faulty tube. There are a couple of things that I want to add:1. When I have used the stand-by switch to put the tv into stand-by mode there first appears a thin green line running from centre-right to centre- left of the screen. Then a small red spot light appears exactly in the middle of the screen.2.The sound, of late, has started to diminish in volume around the time the picture is affected by those diagonal lines- on occassions there is no sound. On, either, using the stand-by switch or swithcing the main tv button off and on the sound may return. During the early period of this problem I stopped using the stand-by switch and noticed that I maintained a good picture quality for longer periods!3.In the beginning of this problem I noticed a lot of static electricity discharge on the tv screen -those days I had a electric fan fed from the same multi-socket mains connector. I have ,for long now, removed the fan into another room - the problem still persists. Could you kindly tell me what I should ask my engineer to consider/do with the tv when I next call him.Thank you.

Re: Samsung TV

Just read your list of problems The first fault (Diagonal lines & picture collapse from left & right) Sounded like either A poor connection or dry solder joint either on scan coils or scan coil plug / socket on main pcb.
If this were the case the engineer that called out should have spotted this & sorted it very easily. But you say it is still the same so what did he do ?
Did he give you a reciept with break down of what he did ? If yes please post it here for me to go over.

The sound problem you describe has thrown me a little so could you please post your tv model number on this page so I can see if this is a stock fault.

The static shocks you are getting is relatively normal & not a problem unless you are getting them off of speaker grilles or even tv casing if it is silver in colour.
I am UK based & have access to samsung technical but I will need your tv model number.

How do I change it from wide screen to regular? I have a black area above and below the picture.

You can set the picture size by remote control itself.

You can vide 480i format programmes in three picture sizes. 4:3, 16:9, and ZOOM
You can change the picture size by pressing the PICTURE SIZE button on the remote control.
4:3 Picutre size
To fill the screen, the top and bottom edges are extedted more widely, although the center of the picture remains near the former ratio.
If receiving a 4:3 programme, the image size is displayed in its originally formatted proportion.
16:9 picure size
This image displays the size of standard 16:9 with black bars at the top and bottom.
If receiving a 4:3 programme, the image is displayed with black bars at the top and bottom and stretched wider.

NOTE: If a fixed bar remains on the screen for a long period of time, the image can become parmanantly engrained in the screen and cause subtle but permanent ghost images. Never leave your TV for long periods of time while it is displaying these images.

Zoom picture size [for 16:9 formats]
The entire picture is uniformly enlarged --it is stretched the same amount both wider and taller (retains its original proportion). The right and left edges of the picture may be hidden.

I was living in Beijing and I have moved to London UK and my TV does not work? Can a TV bought in China work in the UK?

The answer to your question is NO!

The frequencies and transmission standard in the UK are different from China and that is why it will not pick up any TV stations here in the UK.

You are going to have to buy a UK TV set and my motto is: Always buy a TV in the country you live in!

As for your current Chinese TV - scrap it!

The problem here is heat related and can be as simple as poor solder connections at the vertical IC or a defective IC. If you can supply the make and model, more detailed information can be posted. If you can solder, there you may be able to fix this your self. Please update this with the make and model as well as whether or not you wish to attempt the repair and additional details and instructions will follow.
