Can no longer access my Iomega external hard drive - get pop up message for corruption

I bought my Iomega 500 Gig external hard drive a few years ago and used it flawlessly with my old computer which ran Windows XP - I bought my new computer over a year ago and it runs Windows 8 - still the Iomega ran flawlessly - the other day I turned it on, I can hear it's motor running normal, light comes on, computer makes the sound to acknowlege it but when I go to "my computer" to accesst he drive, the icon no longer says Iomega - just J drive - I click on the icon and I get a pop up telling me J:\ is not accessible - The disc structure is corrupted and unreadable - any suggestions on how to get my material out of there and/or fix the error?

SOURCE: I have an Iomega external

If you are expert, try to open up casing and directly connect to cpu. But it work if your motherboard is supported with sata. Sometimes, usb port have problem with power. try it if you dont have any solution. I'm also do this and now, my external hard disk became internal hard disk to my pc.

if you dont want, try using other cable, or using other usb port

no --there are no engineers at fixya site
from your description the aux hard drive has failed
Most hard drives using discs are good for around 3 years max and then the bushes and bearings fail
If that is the case then you will have to find a repair shop that has the capability to remove the disc from the hard drive and recover all that you have saved
if it as what I have suggested then consider this
There are hard drives (SSHD) on the market that use solid state technology and do not have spinning discs that fail over time
The cost is around $60.00 per gig of storage
best if you take it to a computer repair shop for a proper diagnosis and while there discuss the SSHD technology to prevent failures in future

Iomega 320 external hard drive computer wont recognise

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

You better check with the Seagate people. This seems to be a problem with the casing. And since you're under warranty, you can get a replacement.

Iomega 500 gb hard drive: large file transfers

The default format for the IOMega drive is FAT32. This format will work on all versions of Windows, as well as Mac OS9 and above. Unfortunately, FAT32 can't handle files larger than 4gigs. If you want to use larger files, you're going to have to remove all the files from your IOMega drive and use your computer to format it to NTFS (Windows 2000/XP/Vista) or HFS+ (Mac OS9/X).

Consult your owner's manual for specific details.
