Can I add a BSR to a Bernina 1260?

Not really. The Bernina BSR units need to be attached electronically to the machine to activate the "electronic eye." Your 1260 is an earlier mechanical-electronic machine that does not have that electronic-attachment capability, ie there is no where to plug a BSR unit into your machine. However, with practice (both with pencil on paper and then transferring that muscle memory to the machine), you should be able to learn to free motion quilt on your 1260. It just takes practice and patience.

Can I do stippling on my 400xl

This is free motion quilting. There are a ton of web sites and videos available. You'll need a darning or free motion quilting foot for your machine. Drop the feed dogs. If you are certain you want to do free motion quilting, a Supreme Slider helps you move the fabric.

Is there a setting to quilt freehand?

Are you asking about free motion quilting (FMQ)?

If so, you need a darning foot of some type (a foot that does not press the fabric to the sewing surface).

You need to drop the feed dogs (or if your machine does not have that capability, a feed dog cover that probably came with your machine and set the stitch length to zero).

Then, add lots of PRACTICE!!! I like to draw designs on a white board with an erasable white board marker... The more fluid you can become, the better experience you will have with FMQ.

How to get sq.inches? To measure quilt for cost

Multiple the length (inches) by the width (inches) = sq. inches.

Not quite sure what you attempting to do. Usually, a quilt is measured length for the length of the bed, and width for the width of the bed (and add any additional to drape down over the edge).

How to bind a quilt

Making a binding is going to be stronger and give a neater edge finish. I tried to do what you are suggesting with my first quilt, by stitching around the outside edge, then trimming the top fabric and batting back, then turning the bottom fabric up and over twice. But I really struggled with it and it went away in the UFO pile. When I returned to it I asked a fellow quilter and she sent me some images and said always make crosswise grain binding, usually 5 1/2" or 6 " wide. I would really suggest you make a binding, as it makes mitreing the corners so much easier than trying to turn over and get it square still. The binding edge also holds everything together so needs to be hard wearing and a bound crosswise grain double thickness binding does this best.

I have a Brothers 1500s. When I quilt with it the stiches skip every now an then leaving a large gap between stitches. Do I have the quilt to far up from the base of hte machine when I quilt? Should the...

Your top tension is based on the fabric thickness.. not just a number. Make a test sandwich of all the materials you are quilting with, cotton top, batting, lining, etc. Test your tension on that until you get it right.

The skipping is a symptom of a bad needle or the presser foot not having enough pressure on it. I'm not familiar with your machine so I don't know if it has the ability to add more pressure to the presser foot.

How to wash quilt fabric in the front loader.

You will have to experiment a little, You will use less soap and add fabric softener to the soap. The fabric softener helps decrease the sudsing action of the soap. This is not condoned by the manufacturer, but it does work.

We use a powdered soap and have found that about 1/3 the soap and just less than a 1/2 cap of softener works best. (the soap we prefer is not available in a "he" formula). Mix the soap and softener prior to adding it to the machine. works for us, hope it works for you too.
