After a while the images on the screen go blank. However the machine is still running. I have selected never in the sleep mode for both plugged in and on battery. It did not seem to help. The computer screen still goes blank after a while. nothing seems to re-activate the screen. What would you suggest?

Try updating the graphics driver from the link below.
Also, as far as I can remember, this graphics card "borrows" memory from system RAM so you should upgrade to as much RAM as the system will allow. Driver Details Dell US

You can restore your system in your safe mode.
To use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
  3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
  4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.

Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
  5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
  6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page is displayed.
  7. Click OK.
If you successfully restored your computer to a previous state, and the computer is performing as it should be, you are finished.

toggle between screen display modes by holding function and f8 together- there may be a few seconds delay between each settings so be patient
if that fails , then goto display settings and in advanced you should be able to select the displays you want.

Troubleshoot dell e5500

Depending upon your operating system, try reducing your resolution to something lower. If your resolution is currently at 1920 x 1600, reduce it down to 1280 x 1024. This should allow you back up & regroup.

On a blank portion of your screen, <Right Click> your mouse, choose "Properties" for Windows XP or "Screen Resolution" for Windows 7, for Windows XP go to the last tab, Find the Resolution slider or drop down menu and choose a lower resolution than the one you are currently using.

If your laptop is connected to an external monitor, use the monitor menu buttons to recenter and shrink the image back to factory settings.

Is it ok to install window 7 to dell e500

You can scan your computer for compatibility as long as you are connected to the internet.

Visit: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

Down towards the bottom is a button that says: 'Scan your PC for compatibility' Below that is a link to download the advisory software. This software will scan your computer and tell you if it will run Windows 7 and if not, what you can upgrade to make it work.

Thanks and please rate of this helps you! :)
