Question about Pool & Spa
Display shows SPK and I hear a clicking sound. Pool technician says I need a new circuit board and igniter for $500+ which I am skeptical about. What else could it be and what can I do to troubleshoot?
It would be unusual for both the board and the igniter to go out at the same time. You should have a CFH code before SPK . That is Call For Heat and SParK. The clicking is the heater trying to fire up. It sounds like the igniter is doing its job. For some reason there is no gas getting to the pilot. That could be the board not telling the gas valve to open. It could also be the gas valve malfunctioning. You may want to have another tech take a look at it. It could just be dust or dirt in the pilot assembly.

I am not sure if you have solved this issue, or not, but here is one idea. When you turn on the heater, it is reading the temp at 125/126 correct? IF this is what the heater is reading, then the problem is the Thermistor,or temp sensor, and is very easy to replace.
If you have an Owner's Manual, there are part numbers and instructions on how to replace the Thermistor. If you do not have one, follow the link below and it will take you to one online:

coud be several things, Do you have Gas and is gas toruned on. Is valve on. The Pilot could be dirty and need cleaned. $350+ sounds reallly pricy for a pilot assembly. Call your Gas Company and get an Estimate and a Qualifed Service tech. You may try turning Off the Power to the Heater Unit and turning it back on , and then trying to turn on heater again, So times after several atemps the valve will lock out and the power needs reset on Propane units.

The Fan code would indicate a problem with the combustion air blower. The is a pressure switch to indicate there is sufficent combustion air, and if not then unit shuts down. Either the fan isn't running, or there is an obsturction in the fan or exhaust piping, preventing enough air flow.
cfh would be call for heat, which would be a normal display when water temp is below setpoint
See the link below for a manual. Once you open the page look on lower right side for documents, then install manual

Tips for a great answer:
Jul 24, 2014 | Rheem Water Heaters
spk I think means spark for ignition and plt means pilot so i assume the heater tried to light but the pilot light is not staying on. could be dirtly contact on the ignition spark plug or dirty pilot flame need to be cleaned and the unit serviced.
i hope this was useful.
