2003 vw jetta 1.8t High revving and loss of power

I have a 2003 jetta 1.8t auto, check engine light has been on for a while. It has an oil leak in the engine that drips into the spark plugs, also burns oil which has a weird smell. (black smoke) It has a loss of power and recently started revving (searching) non-stop every time i drive it, and it shut off on me while driving this morning. What could the problem be?

The problem is you drove with a "check engine " light on! This means you made the problem worse. You need to check the codes (Autozone or Pepboys will do it) because knowing you were the owner, this Volkswagen recorded all the sensor fuel and other issues that came up while you ran it.
These codes will tell you all the faults, and Pep boys will sell you the parts

Jetta 3 rev counter jumps as soon as i switch the engine on and never stops even when driving

If the engine is revving up then i'd say you likely have a vacuum leak, or the cars' high-idle setting is stuck on. If this is just the rev counter and the engine idles like normal, that I would guess that the rev counter is getting a bad electrical signal from somewhere and would require checking a wiring diagram at the least.

My car smells like its burning oil, and there is oil in my spark plug wells. Guy at auto parts store says I need to replace oil gaskets that go around spark plugs. Is this a valid diagnosis and if so is it...

As far as I know spark plugs only have a metal type washer to seal, and there is no other oil seal needed. I have know oil to leak from rocker cover and fill spark plug wells, but tis also often covers engine. Burning oil smell couldbe from oil going onto the outside of hot engine. Check oil loss via dip stick. Clean all oil from outside engine to find out sites of leaks. Hope this helps.

How to check auto trans oil, 2003 jetta tdi

THE 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

At the bottom of the automatic gearbox (tiptronic) you will find one threaded plug on below surface, (follow red arrow in the picture below). This is for emptying.

The oil level threaded plug is placed on the car front lateral automatic gearbox surface, (follow yellow arrow in the picture below).

The filling oil plug is placed on the upper automatic gearbox surface, (follow green arrow in the picture below).

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) checking:
1. Requirements for check:
1.1. Vehicle standing on level surface.
1.2. Transmission must not be in fail-safe mode.
1.3. Shift lever in "P" position, parking brake applied.
1.4. Engine idling.
1.5. Air Conditioner and heater OFF.
1.6. ATF temperature must not exceed 104 Fahrenheit degree (40 Celsius degree) at start of test.
1.7. Automatic gearbox oil capacity: 2,5 liter. Only ATF with VW designation may be used. Do not use any lubricant additives.
1.8. Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF - part number: VW G 052 990 A2
1.9. An ATF level check when transmission oil temperature is too low results in overfilling, when too high results in underfilling.
2. CAUTION: Too much or too little ATF will affect the operation of the transmission. The ATF level must be checked at regular intervals.

On my 2004 Jetta 1,8T the brakes are starting to get hard. Taking s little more pressure on the brake pedal to stop the car. What could be causing this??? Thanks

The most likely cause is loss of power assistance to the braking system which means you will need to apply increased brake pressure to compensate for the loss of assistance.

The problem will be with the brake servo assist. It is possible there is a leak in the brake servo assist system, which reduces the vacuum, so you are not getting sufficient mechanical assistance when applying the brakes.

It is unwise to be driving the car with this condition. If you lose all power assistance to the brakes, which could easily occur with this fault, the pedal will become very hard, you will need to apply very high pedal pressure and the vehicle will be very difficult to stop. You need to take the car to a VW dealer for service or to a competent brake specialist in your area to inspect the system and rectify the fault.

VW did a recall on some earlier year models for a leaking brake servo and I understand the problem was a faulty vacuum hose which would fail and leak. I am not aware of any recall for this item on later models like your 2004 vehicle.

All the best.

I have a vw jetta gli 2003 and the steering stopped working a few days ago. i found out from my mechanic that he will need to replace the racket pinon steering unit. he said it's going to cost around 2,000...

If there is no oil leak from the steering rack, check the first power steering oil pump. But if the steering wheel doesn.t turn at all-change steering rack.

I have a 2003 VW jetta tdi

You've lost engine coolant somewhere, and need to fill the engine back up with the VW special G12 coolant.

Then find the leak, which will be in one or more of the following places -
Water hoses to heater core, including any other coolant carrying hoses in the engine compartment
Radiator hoses
Plastic manifold bolted to side of engine which is known to leak (have replaced on an '01 VW Beetle, and an '02 Jetta, both members of our family in the past few years.).
Overflow reservoir cracked
Radiator leak.

Reply back what you find. If the engine got too hot, you may need to have the thermostat replaced.
