How to test an LCD TV or monitor PSU and inverter


Hi.

Before proceeding I assume you have technical training along with the multimeter. A full testing must be done with power on, and for safety reason must not be done by an untrained user.

The tip contains only general indications. The reader is supposed to have the training to apply in practice the testing method below.

If there is no power at all, then the responsible is almost always the PSU.

When there is no power, test AC in to PSU. If there is no AC in (read volts, or read ohms on power cable), that means that the power cord must be replaced.

If there is AC in, then test the PSU section near to AC input. You always find a resistor or a fuse in there . Check if it has blown.
After that you test the rest of PSU component. If there is no power at all , and problem is not power cord, it is often possible to spot at a glance a leaky or bulged capacitor.

If there is power, but the monitor stays in standby, then te PSU is forced to low voltage only by controller board. This happens when a fault had been detected.

In this case testing the PSU becomes more complicate. The technician must locate the control lines from controller board. This control lines operate at lower PSU voltage (often +5V), and turn on higher voltages on PSU board.

The inverter may use for example a +20V line from PSU. The +20V line is turned on by the controller board, closing a +5V control line to PSU. When PSU is in standby mode, the technician testing the PSU must bridge the +5V line with the PSU low +5V circuit, and test if the +20V line to the inverter gets turned on.

As explained this kind of test must not be done by the unexperienced user, as the chance to waste the unit beyond repair is high, and there are also many safety concerns.

After testing the PSU, next part to test will be the inverter board.

The inverter is tested reading DC voltage in from controller board, and AC out to back light system.
The inverter is an high voltage board, remember, safety first when testing AC circuit.

If the inverter has no DC from controller, then test PSU, if PSU is OK, and inverter has still no DC in when PSU line to inverter is on, then replace controller board.
If the inverter has DC in, and no AC out, then replace the inverter.
If the inverter has DC in and AC out when higher DC voltage to inverter is turned on, then test at component level the main controller board, and if present test LCD controller.

What or how does the battery get its charge


Most bike have an alternator driven off the left-hand crankshaft shaft.
This turns with the engine, producing the AC charging power.
This power then runs through a voltage regulator, that both converts the the AC voltage into DC voltage, and regulates the amount of voltage flowing into the remaining electrical system.

Now, you did do the first step correctly.
DC volt meter to battery terminals to see if you get 13-14 volts DC with engine running.
Next, locate voltage regulator and unplug connector for wires coming FROM the regulator, and hook up the DC voltmeter.
With engine running, you should have 13-14 (or so) DC volts.

If not, locate and unplug wires coming from alternator to regulator, and hook up AC (note change from DC to AC) voltmeter.
With engine running, should have AC voltage (this could be 20-40 volts or more).

This will let you know where the problem is, and what needs to be replaced.

DC to AC power cord Do they still make them if so under what name or product name?


"DC to AC" cords are not really a common item. They are called "Inverters". Typical inverters are 12VDC to 120VAC and are found in mobile applications to operate houshold current type (120VAC) devices. Inverters cost many times more than thier "AC to DC" or "AC to AC" sisters.

An "AC to DC" and "AC to AC" cord however, is a very common item. They are usually called simply "AC Adapters" and are sold in many electronics stores (Best Buy, Fry's, etc.) and electronic specialty stores (Radio Shack) and electrnics suppliers (MCM, etc.) Nearly all of them are designed to reduce the voltage in your home (120 VAC volts alternating current) to a different but usually lower voltage that is either AC or DC.

In order to select the proper AC adapter, you need to know:
(1) Input Voltage - this is the outlet voltage - often 120 volts in N. America, (2) Output voltage - this is the voltage the device needs and is often indicated near the jack, The adapted must match this voltage. (3) the device voltage type - this will be either AC or DC. The adapter must match the type as they are NOT interchangeable. (4) the size and type plug on the cord that will allow it to mate properly with the jack. There are many, many types and it should be tested for fit prior to plugging in and must match the device jack (5) the power requirements - this is usually shown as a number in Watts (w) and / or Amps (a). It is very important that the apdapter power rating is equal to or greater than the amount specified by the device. Failure to meet the requirements above can cause failure of the device, adapter or both.

My shark vacuum is blowing out dirt


i think that somehow the motor is running in reverse for whatever reason ,could the motor be DC and somehow the rectifier has gone wrong ,what voltage is this machine i wonder ,like 220c AC input but with a DC motor for some strange reason so it can run on a camper van as 12v ??

Asus charger not working for some reason.


hi,

You can check the voltage of your charger by using a multi-meter to verify if it has a voltage output (usually 15-24Vdc) depending on the output voltage rating of your charger printed on the nameplate.

If voltage is well below the rating (+/-10% of rated voltage) you have a defective charger and replace it.

if voltage is fine, then most likely the dc port of your unit is defective or turn loose and that is the most common problem on laptops.

Converting ac to dc voltage


You need to transform the voltage to a level that you require, then 'rectify' your voltage to DC, with a bridge rectifier. There are many different types of rectifiers for different uses. Look on the web for electronics, bridge rectifiers.
