Question about Frigidaire 20 cu. ft. / 566 liter Upright Freezer FFU20FC4A

1 Answer

I have a 20 ft. Frigidaire upright freezer ab out 10 years old. Model #FFU2QF9FW1 and it will not stay cool enough so that items are about half thawed out. It takes it 3 days to freeze l/2 pint of water. I have had two service calls by Frigidaire Repairmen and they say there is nothing wrong with it. Said it was so hot and humid and put a fan on it to help it cool. Any idea what is wrong? Thanks!

Sounds like it is not working properly to me. If not done already, clean out the radiator and air vents around the compressor to aid cooling.
All freezers and fridges are designed to work in a hot climate so ask if it needs the gas pressure increasing.
If it is gong to cost a lot, now may be the time to get a new more efficient one, it will save you money in the end.

If unit is running then it is not worth fixing. I cannot see your repyl due to some tech issue w/ the site, so it may be a day or so before I can reply again. Please leave feedback for me if appropriate. Thanks

SOURCE: Ice forms on copper pipe under freezer off compressor

it sound like your unit has a bad sensor on it or a leak. you should never have to add refrigerant to a unit unless theres a leak then it has to be repaired firdt the recharged.

Yes that is the correct part number.
If a new cold control does not correct the problem. Replace the compressor start relay.

SOURCE: Whining sound from motor on Frigidaire upright freezer

Hi: It sounds like you bought a frost free freezer as it has a fan. The fan will come on to circulate the air. It will not necessarly run continuosly. The noise is most likely coming from the fan. I sold Frigidaire freezers for years and they are noisy compared to a refridgerator. If you think it is louder than it was when you bought it, I would replace the circulating fan. Also look at the back wall for frost as it could be a bad defrost heater blocking it with ice. Most likely just the fan though. Since it's in a detached garage, and you won't have to put up with the noise inside your house, it could run a while before failing. The fact it's getting cold is a very good sign. Also as you asked 2'nd, a freezer is ok in an unheated garage. Don't put a refrigerator in there. Unless It is a Whirlpoll Gladiator that is designed for such applications. Use www.searspartsdirect.com to find out where the fan is if you feel it is necessary to replace it. Its not a tough job if you are handy. Their shipping is expensive so you might want to buy it locally.

SOURCE: FRIGIDAIRE UPRIGHT FREEZER COMPRESSOR VERY HOT

Well I finally found the screws for the front grill. The compressor started cooling off once the seal was put back in place. So I'm going to give that a day or so. Still did not find the coils I'm assuming that they are in the sides. One thing I do know for sure, is that I'm putting you guys in my favorites. I educated myself so much from your website. I'm not sure I ever had a problem except the seal. I don't have the original motor to check but I'm working on getting it back. If I would have found this website before the tech I would have saved $150.00. Thank you so much.

Is your compressor kicking on? If not then check the contactor-relay and the capacitor. If that isn't the problem then it is probably your compressor. Which is quite expensive to replace.

Check the relay located on the compressor on the back of the unit. Sounds like the relay is not completely shutting down the compressor. Almost like it is still allowing electrical currents to get to the compressor

Freezer Problem

If it started to cool again the compressor was running. Check the condenser and make sure it is clean. Provide as much air movement through the garage as possible . 100 degrees is a high temperature to be operating a refrigerator in.

Not enough information but  if you are refering to the compressor as the black housing below, it seems that the compressor is either seized or burnt out.
