SOURCE: My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

SOURCE: Notebook does not recognize My Book / Western Digital hard drive

I have solved a similar problem to this. My laptop would not allow me to get to my WD Passport. The driver was fine and no errors were reported - it recognised the drive when I ran the hardware removal utility - I just couldn't see it from any of my windows applications and therefore couldn't get to any data.

The problem was that the passport was being designated as E:\ but my laptop already has a network drive mapped to E:\. When I am in the office the computer connects the network drive to E:/ and so my passport automatically picks the next available letter - F:\. Away from the office, the network drive is still buit shows as "disconnected network drive" and somehow the laptop gets confused into designating both the the passport and the disconnected network drive to the same letter. so the passport is not visible in My Computer.

To fix it I went to My Computer, right clicked on the disconnected network drive and select Disconnect from the options there. And hey presto the passport appeared!

You can see which letter your USB HDD is assigned in the device manager in XP. Right click on the device and go to the Volumes tab - click on Populate and the drive letter should be shown there. If that doesn't match what you see under that letter in My Computer it looks like you have a similar problem & so disconnecting whatever is there in My computer might help.

Virtual Cdroms are used to provide the computer with drivers. As soon as the driver is installed, the Cdrom should disappear and the harddrive should be revealed. Windows used to autostart the Setup utility, but since this is a security risk, this was disabled.

You should try to manually run the setup or switch to a drive that is supported out-of-the-box.

External HD isnt recognized by ps3

Hmm, go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Disk Management. Then look or scroll down right hand panel to find your disk. If it is there you could RIGHT click on it and assign a new drive letter such as Q or R.
If it's not there your external disk could be faulty, the power supply transformer or power cable could be faulty or it could be the USB cable.
If all looks OK you probably need to contact a disk recovery specialist such as DATA365.

Comment: NTFS is a much more stable file system and is much easier to recover after errors. FAT32 is not commonly used now.

Buffalo ministation hd-pct500u2 won't allow me access to it

Go Here
And you will have to download the CD image and then burn it on to a disk. This would possibly be why you can't see it in your device manager because it doesn't know what it's looking for and how to run it. by downloading, burning it, and then installing it. The computer will then know exactly what the peripheral is and how to recognize it and run it as a hard drive. I sure hope this has helped.
Thanks, Cody

Create a vitual CD/DVD drive. Convert the installation disc to an image, mount it on your virtual drive and proceed with the installation Do not install the software that creates a virtual drive like Alcohol or Ultr-ISO on any partition other than C where you are likely to install the OS.....
Otherwise use an external CD ROM and do the same by booting from the CD by altering the boot sequence in the BIOS!.......sodeep

Dvd/cd-rom

what have you tried?
does it spin when you put a disk in?
have you tried using a cleaning kit?
how old is your dvd cd drive, how much usuage have you given to it? you may need to consider replacing the item.
have you installed any virtual drives? I remember dealing with an issue semilar to one described due to a virtual drive that I had installed.
if possible check the datacable.
firmware is something that you may want to update, read carefully for instructions in the manufacturer website... no garanteed that will fix any hardware issue like a faultry track that may need to be lubed, a broken motor or a faulty/dirty lense.
