Ocassionally you can find replacement parts on Ebay, but if the external screen you are referring to is the chassis screen - typically a clear portal in the case to see the actual display, then this is integral to the case and is not replaceable.

A replacement screen will fix that but before you replace it, shine a bright light on the screen, if you see movement, it is the back light that is faulty and may only need a replacement inverter. If it is LCD.

Monitor is dark. how to fix?

Walt, hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the Acer, F5, Display Toggle-Over key.

There are at least 3 display options available;

1) Internal display of laptop ONLY

2) Internal display of laptop AND external display

3) External display ONLY.

Were you just using the external display for more 'display real estate room', or was/is there a problem with the internal display of the laptop?

Was no problem? Is now? Even when using the guidance stated above for the Fn and F5 key?

Then if your laptop uses a CCFL for a Backlight, it also uses a screen Inverter. Screen Inverter is bad.

If it doesn't use CCFL/s for a backlight, and uses LED backlighting, replace the LCD screen.
The LED backlighting is incorporated in the LCD screen assembly, and you ain't replacing it.
Replace the entire LCD screen.

Post the laptop manufacturer name, and model number in a Comment. Model number is on Bottom of laptop.

I have a toshiba satellite a355-s6935 the lcd screen was replaced as it had been smashed. Now there is no display on new screen or if I attach an external monitor. All I get is black screen, is it...

Most laptops have a "toggle" to control the video-output:
* only to the internal LCD,
* only to the external VGA port,
* to both internal and external.

Toggle to activate the external VGA port, and connect an external monitor.
If you don't get a picture, then the computer's video-adapter is the problem.

Take the laptop into a darkened room, and look at the LCD screen.
If the inverter is dead, there still should be a VERY-FAINT picture.

My laptop will not show any picture but a black screen. i hear that it is on. my start up tone plays but there is no visual. the screen is just black

F1 and F2 on the keyboard will make the screen go dim or get brighter. Check this first. If the issue still is happening, connect an external display to the computer.
If the a picture show up on the external display but not the internal one. You have an issue with the LCD module and it will need to be replaced.
If you don't get a picture on either external or internal display you have an issue with the video card. Since the video card is attached to the logic board the whole logic board will need to be replaced.

My laptop screen doesnt work, I'm using a remote screen which only works when Win XP fires up. I want to know how to negate the password on my HDD so it won't keep asking for it when i boot up on a blank...

Windows is treating the "internal" screen as separate from your "external" screen,
i.e., you've seen computer-geeks with two side-by-side screens, with the Windows Desktop
spanning both screens. With a bit of "tuning", you can nominate the "external" screen as the "primary" screen, and thus see the Windows Desktop (which currently is showing on the "internal" screen). Or, for about $100 plus $60 labour, replace the LCD screen on your laptop with a "pre-owned" LCD screen.

When i turn the notebook on i can see nothing blank black screen

Sounds like one of two issues,

1. You have the internal display turned off. When you turn the laptop on you should hear a single beep. Do you see the Sony Logo during bootup? Have you tried to turn the display back on? Try pressing the Fn+F7, or Fn+F8, key combination. There are only three modes and these key combinations allow you to cycle through these modes. Either the Primary Screen is on, or the External Screen is on, or both are on.

2. You may have a bad video card or the screen is dead. When you power up the laptop, can you see a glow, but the screen is black? Can you see the Bootup Screen with the Sony Logo, but barely? Have you tried to connect an external monitor to the laptop to see if the video card is working? If you get video to the external monitor, the video card is working. If you don't, then the video card may be bad. If you are getting video on the external monitor, try using the key combinations listed above and try to cycle through your Internal/External display modes.If nothing shows up on the laptop display then the LCD screen may be bad. It could be the back light. Those are internal to the LCD. That means you will have to replace the entire LCD display on the laptop.

Hope that helps.

Screen won't work on external monitor

Most laptops have a "video" option:
* output only to internal screen
* output only to external screen
* output to both screens

Be sure to select the 2nd or 3rd option.

Also, reset your internal screen-resolution to 1024 by 768;
hopefully, your external screen will support this resolution.

Screen blank but when toggled you can see output on external monitor

sounds like the internal video card has a direct feed problem, it plays on external. while screen is hooked to external check control panel for main screen dianostics. You have to live with it untill it fails altogether. Internal video is starting to fail. time for new laptop
