Question about Acer Computers & Internet
Hi, the left SHIFT key of my Acer aspire stopped working after I cleaned the keyboard.I remember pressing multiple buttons while the laptop was accidentally still on.. anything I might have done? the right one works perfectly. thanks
If this is a wireless keyboard, you can do two things to try to correct this issue. You can remove the batteries and leave it sit for a few minutes and try again, or you can replace the batteries and see it that helps.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

you can pull the keys out of their sockets and wipe the rubber and plastic holders with a wet cloth. but be very carefull to cloth should not leak, just be wet to dissolve and absorbe the sugar and other stuff that stick the keys. then just insert the keys in the sockets

I met the same problem, and I fixed it.
For my own case, it is mainly a hardware malfunction happening at the data bus(the wide, plastic strand) connecting the keyboard to the mainboard.
I found that part of that strand was bent, so I squeezed it to keep it flat.
everything has been OK since I did that.

SOURCE: problems with the keyboard
Sticky keys can sometimes be fixed by hitting right shift key 10 times quickly (I'm not lying!!), and or the culprit key (x) the same way. Try that and if it doesn't work, reboot and type. If it continues, please try another keyboard.

The 8042 keyboard controller has been integrated into one chip with other I/O functions so I doubt you can replace it as a single IC and I'm afraid that is what has failed.
It is an extremely rare failure but I guess it has to happen some time.
The keyboard is kind of a polled matrix so it only takes the failure of a single line to bollix things up.
I think what you are talking about here is a motherboard exchange or repair.
