That error means either your hard has failed, has bad sectors or the operating system has corruption. Worst case you will need to replace the hard drive and re-install everything. Best case you will need to re-install everything again. You could try and run a program called Sea Tools to attempt and repair bad sectors on the drive.

SOURCE: message on screen

do you have a floppy disk in it? or is it set to boot from the cd drive, with a non-bootable os disk in it?

those errors usually happen when you computer does not find a os system in the device it is set to boot from. Try setting it to boot from the hard drive.

SOURCE: issues with my compaq armada

Hello Mitchiko

This error message is often the result of corruption on your hard disk. Quite likely including the MBR.

This could indicate your hard disk is failing or just that there was a glitch in your system that caused your MBR to be over-written or corrupted. In any event, w/ an error like this, you're going to need to ...
(01) Test your hard disk to make sure it's OK
(02) Attempt to restore your MBR

There are some great (free) MBR tools HERE.

There's a nice article HERE on "How to Repair your MBR". The author does a nice job of explaining what the MBR is and how to repair it.

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for you or, of course, if you have more questions, etc. on this topic.

Thank you
BJ

Turn it all the off. Then pull the hard drive out and put it back in again. Now, put your system disk (Win XP?) into the drive and turn the laptop on. It should do something else now. I have had this happen on several laptops I have rebuilt and it takes patience to get them started sometimes.... I have managed to load XP onto all of them eventually!

Hope this helps

I did a self test on my hp compaq nc6400 and got a read failure message.is this my hard drive.does it need to be replaced

First thing, back up all of the files that you want to keep onto either an external drive/stick/disc etc as read failures relate to hard disc drive read/write errors within specific clusters or sectors. You may get away with replacing the drive for the moment but your best bet is to run CHKDSK which will require a reboot as its a DOS utility and then run disk defragmenter which can be found in the system tools folder within Windows Vista. This will take quite a long time depending on the size of the drive but it should find any damaged clusters/sectors and quarantine them so that the installed applications don't write any files to these areas. If the however the drive starts clicking and excessively whirring

I got a message that reads Non-System disc or disc error replace and strike any key when ready. What do I do?

Hi,

Here the reason why youre getting the error message

Remove the non-system disk from your boot device. For example, remove the non-system disk from the floppy drive or the CD-ROM drive.

Change your computer's boot sequence in you Bios. Make sure that you select a device that has boot files (or operating system files) installed.

If you start your computer from a hard disk drive, install a bootable operating system (such as Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7) on the drive.

Thanks for using Fixya

Non system disk or disk error

This error can be a couple of things. If the "boot block" on the disk has become faulty, the system won't recognize that the disk has an operating system on it and will generate this error message. If the disk is defective completely, the same error will occur. If you have a boot floppy or CD, try re-writing the boot block on the disk. If that fails to resolve the problem, the disk is defective and will need to be replaced.
