Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

Everytime I try to print something I get one of two messages: 1) out of paper or 2) paper mismatch. There is paper and the paper size is correct.

The printer is HP J6480 and the paper is regular 20 lb weight 8.5" x 11".

  • tbb0 Jun 14, 2009

    Windows XP

  • tbb0 Jun 14, 2009

I've done all of the above and I'm still getting the paper mismatch message.

  • tbb0 Jun 14, 2009

Okay...thanks...It looks as if one of the rollers is pulling the paper stronger than the other.

    Thanks again!

This is quite a common problem. What make and model is your printer, and what oeprating system are you running (like Windows XP or Vista)?

Is it possible that you are using card to print on? If the paper is too thick this is one of the most common causes of those errors. What type of paper are you using? And finally, is the paper adjusting slider pushed all the way until it touches the edge of the paper?

These questions will allow me to assist further.

Best regards

OK it seems this model of printer's paper sensor is - if the paper is correct - errorneously detecting the paper as one it doesn't support. As I say it can be a common issue in some printers.

If you can reproduce the error by printing something and getting the paper mismatch error, I'd like you to press the OK (or Resume button) on the printer iteself and see if it can bypass this error and try printing anyway.

Another factor on this HP printer is that the back of the printer has a panel to allow for a double-sided printing accessory to be inserted. It can become loose very easily and give these errors. Check the back of the printer for any loose panels. If so, push them back in. Again, very common with HP (I'm not blaming HP, best printers I know of).

Now if that doesn't help and it happens persistently, you will need to adjust your printer settings so that it matches the type of document you are printing. Some printers are quite intelligent (but annoying) at detecting whether your print settings matched your paper type. HP printers like yours user a red laser light to scan the paper size, and a sensor to detect the thickness. Unfortunately it can be annoying - I have a similar printer but don't get this problem. You can try the following if it persists:

Step one: Change the paper type setting

    1. Press the Cancel button on the control panel to cancel the print job.

    2. In the program you are printing from, click File , and then click Print . The Print window opens.

    3. In the Name: drop-down list, select the correct printer, if it is not already selected.

    4. Click Properties or Preferences in the upper-right corner of the Print window. The Properties or Printing Preferences window opens.

The name of the window is dependent on the software installed on your computer.

    5. Click the Features tab.

    6. In the Paper Type: drop-down list, select the paper type that matches the paper loaded in the product. For example, select Photo Paper if you are printing photos.

If the correct paper type is not listed, select More in the drop-down list to display more options.

    7. Click OK . Do not close the Properties or Printing Preferences window.

Step two: Change the paper size setting

    1. From the Size: drop-down list, click More to display the paper size options. The Size is: dialog box opens.

    2. In the Size is: dialog box, scroll to the appropriate paper-size category.

    3. Click the paper size that matches the paper loaded in your product, and then click OK .
If your paper size is not listed, follow these steps to set a custom paper size:

      1. On the Size is: dialog box, click Cancel to return to the Properties or Printing Preferences window.

      2. From the Size: drop-down list, click Custom . The Custom Paper Size dialog box opens.

      3. In the Name box, type a name for the paper size you are using. For example, if you are printing 101.6 x 203.2 mm (4 x 8 inch) envelopes, type something like 4x8 envelopes .

You must enter a custom size name in the Name box; otherwise the Save button appears unavailable when you try to save the setting.

      4. In the Paper Size area, type the appropriate measurements in the Width and Length boxes. For example, if you are printing 101.6 x 203.2 mm (4 x 8 inch) envelopes, type 4 in the Width box, and 8 in the Length box.

      5. In the Units area, select the appropriate unit of measurement, and then click Save .

If Save appears unavailable, make sure you have entered a name for the setting in the Name box.

      6. Click OK . The Custom Paper Size dialog box closes.

      7. Back on the Properties or Printing Preferences window, select the Size: drop-down list, and then click More .

      8. Under Custom , click the custom paper size name you created, and then click OK .

    4. Try printing again.

In the end, you may just want to dry getting the latest software. You can get that here for XP.

    Best of luck!

    With regards

This seems to be a problem with this model. Online reviews for J6480 paper mismatch return many reviews from customers with the same continuous error. It may be repairable. It may be a problem with the paper sensor, or a design flaw in the internal firmware. I can only recommend it is seen at a printer repair shop.

How can I print envelopes on my HP C5180. I've had it over 2 years and have never been able to get it to print any size envelopes. I always get a 'paper mismatch' message. HP tech support has never...

I tried all of the suggestions on here and nothing worked. My envelopes are 5x7.3. So, I finally just put in 5x7 and lo and behold, even though there truly was a paper mismatch this time since that was NOT the size of the envelopes, they printed. I did have to move the text boxes some to make them print correctly. So, I guess the solution for my printer is to actually mismatch the size of the paper/envelope so that you will NOT get the "paper mismatch" error message. Will it work on other size envelopes? I have no clue. This is the first time I've ever been able to print an envelope at all with this printer that I've had 2 or 3 years.

Paper size mismatch is appearing on the screen

if that is when your printing you have to check and be sure the paper tray size is set correctly. You press the machine status button and make sure, tray 1, 2 and the bypass are set to the proper size paper.

Paper Mismatch

I had this problem on the 6300 and was able to fix it by doing the following:

After selecting print, select preferences.
Select the Features tab.
Under Resizing Options, select "Custom" from the drop down menu.
Put in the custom dimensions of the paper on which you are printing.
Save it under a new name (e.g., "Invitation")

When it is time to print,
Select "More" from the drop down tab under Resizing Options.
At the bottom of the list of those options, you will see your custom sized saved.
Select it, and happy printing.

Lanier 5645 cannot reset printer red button just keeps coming on

when you press the 'red' button, it probably says 'paper mismatch, or load "XXX" paper, and you can override it by selecting one of your paper trays manually? It is likely a "legal size document' and you don't have legal size paper loaded, or something along those lines. Try printing the document after manually selecting the paper size/tray (turning off auto paper select) in your printer preferences dialog box on your PC first.

Printing to 4 x 6 paper

Hello oyam26,
For any paper mismatch issue, first thing you do is try to set the paper type to plain. This will fix the issue in most of the cases.
