How do I do a basic satin stitch ? My machine only has patterned satin stitches

A satin stitch is a combination of a wide zig-zag and a short stitch length. Set the stitch width to the maximum. Then while stitching, shorten the stitch length until the threads lay next to each other so no fabric shows between the threads but the threads do not overlap. It would help if you have a satin stitch foot so there is space under the presser foot for the extra threads.

Can I sew a Blanket stitch with my Bernina 930 Record machine?

Once upon a time, a blanket stitch used to be a long wide zigzag stitch. If you are referring to an electronic stitch version that would look like the inverse of a blind-hem stitch, then no, this is not possible on the 930 record machine.
What is nowadays called a blanket stitch used for quilting applications requires the machine to stop feeding during the stitching cycle to allow for the single stitch to the left and then back again. An electronic step motor machine, common to all newer Bernina machines can do this and or similar functions. That being said, don't be thinking about getting rid of your 930. Better to get one of the newer units for occasional blanket stitching and keep the Swiss made 930. The Bernina 930 is a lifetime machine. Computers machines are not lifetime class machines by virtue of being computers. Electronics are short lived.

Stitch width knob

What's the model? Do you have the stitch selector set on straight stitch, or on a stitch with a width component, like a blind hem stitch?
Some machines consider straight stitch to be a zigzag stitch of width=0, while others have separate settings for a straight stitch and a zigzag (or other) stitch.

Why straight stitch will not work but zigzag and herringbone stitches work on my machine.

it sounds like the machine needs to be checked at a sewing
machine shop to see what's wrong with the cam's or gear
that makes the stitches

Trouble sewing lycra fabric using a zig zag stitch

You have the machine set for blind hem stitching. Change the stitch selector to stretch stitch, which is a single, in line stitching zig zag stitch.

I want a loose button-hole type of stitch to do my first applique by machine. I have put the needle to one side, put on foot #20 -- and now what stitch?

This depends entirely on your model of machine and the kinds of stitches it is designed to make. Not all machines will make the kind of stitch you describe. My machine has a buttonhole stitch, but with slanted bars, and it really doesn't give the right look.

Check your machine manual and look for a stitch that gives you the look you want--you might have a "blanket stitch" option. If your machine doesn't offer a buttonhole or blanket stitch that gives you the look you want, you may want do use a narrow zigzag satin-stitch. You can also do a straight stitch very close to the raw edge of a fused applique but it won't look as tidy.
