SOURCE: snow blower starts right up but dies once i engage the blades?

Hi,

it is possible the engine is starving for fuel, so essentially it is a carburetor problem with fuel mixture.
Check and see if your carburetor has mixture adjustment needles, there may be an adjustment possible to fix this problem.
Also, sometimes a tiny vent hole in the carb caseing gets clogged causing the engine to run rough or stall.
Does your engine seem to run better if you close the Choke ?

Hope this helps you.

SOURCE: Dies when clutch disengaged

It sounds like the seat switch is disconnected or failed. Check it out. If it thinks there is no **** on the seat it will cause your symptoms.

SOURCE: I have a 15.5 HP Sears Craftsman 42

I'm betting that you need a new safety kill switch - probably the one underneath the seat (the spring-loaded plunger switch that won't let you use the machine without your *** in the seat). Could also be the one behind the "dash" that is associated with the blade engagement mechanism.

I know that the under-seat-switch cannot be bypassed or it will disable the machine in the exact way that you described. Why do I say this? Because I just tried to bypass my own "***-in-the-seat-safety-switch" on my very own 15.5 HP, 42" Sears tractor, and it responded by punishing me - the absense of the switch caused the motor to cut out when I tried to put the machine in gear AND/OR engage the blade. It seems to have some measured capacitance - the absense of same seeming to interrupt the ignition timing enough to shut the motor down when you attempt to get anywhere past neutral or engage the blade. These "safety" switches may be needed by a very few who prefer to be drunk while they mow lawns on steep slopes that their tractor mowers were not designed for, but I find these items to be troublesome and enfuriating. My trees shed a lot of sticks in high winds, and I can't stand shutting the machine down and restarting it EVERY SINGLE TIME I have to dismount to clear sticks or other obstructions out of my mowing path. This is an obnoxious, "nanny-design" feature that desparately needs to be discontinued. It also makes both jump-starting the tractor and electrical troubleshooting much more difficult than they should be. The tractor should let you dismount without shutting down, as long as you have disengaged the blade and shifted into neutral. It should also let you jump start with jumper cables - impossible to do with your rear end in the seat. By the way, call Manufacturer's Supply, Inc. at 1-800-826-8563. They may have a replacement - their item number 31-9664 might do it, but talk to them first. I'm calling them tomorrow. Good luck.

Pto not working blades not engaging

You can hotwire the clutch and see if it clicks, rule out the switch or the safety. If you take the wires apart and jump them, with the battery, it should klik, if not, the clutch is shot, time for a new one, If it clicks, then the switch or the safety is bad. All the parts are available online or ebay, or craigslist. The new ones are expensive. Check it out, hope this helps.

I lose power and stall when i engage clutch to spin snowthrowing blades on my mtd 24" two stage snowblower. any way to fix?

You probably have a small rock or stick jammed in the smaller throwing auger. Carefully rotate the small auger backwards using a stick/board and tapping with a light hammer till the jamming object pops out. Be careful not to place your hands or fingers in even if it is not running. Worst case scenario the worm gear that rotates the larger auger is broken and jammed and needs replacement. If both augers move freely then you will have to remove the cover under the motor and inspect the belt drive mechanism.

Your snowblower carburator is gummed up. Go to an auto parts store and get a can of a carb. cleaner called seafoam. Follow the directions as far as how much to put into the snowblower gas tank. Run it for a few minutes and it will clear up. Regards, Joe

Ariens Snowblower won't engage into drive

I had the same problem with my 5HP Dual stage (C950-520240) Canadian model and found that the arm connected to the traction cable (part #85449 "Shaft Traction Clutch") which forces the friction disk up to the rubber friction wheel had a cracked weld and had bent, preventing positive contact with the rubber friction wheel. The drive wheels would turn if you lifted the back of the machine off the ground, but would not work if under load. First I replaced the belt and rubber friction wheel, but no go. I had to basically disassemble the whole drive assembly to find the problem, very frustrating because you could not see the crack in the arm from head on. I had the cracked and bent arm straightened and welded, all is OK now. enb54.jpg

Not sure how to replace the belt in my MTD, Wards snowblower

Remove the housing with the machine off

The idler pulley is designed to push up against the outside of the belt between the drive and motor pulleys when disegaged the belt should look like a loop like a race track

engage the blade clutch and watch to see if it presses up against the drive pully and the motor pulley

their should be a spring attached to the idler arm and i believe the new belt is dragging a little

you should be able to move the belt with your hands ( it should slip freely) rod is engaged or it pulls the idler away

Either a spring causes tension when the rod is engaged or it pulls the idler away

Keep working with it until it is free you may have an adjustment on the spring tension or the linkage rod has an adjustment

I am sure you can do this without an diagram good luck
