Broken dial/selection knob on whirlpool wfs1072aw-7.5

THe front know/dial isn't working, I guess it isn't catching on whatever mechanism is behind it to swap between cycle types. Is there a safe way to take off the knob or front panel to fix this?

The knob should pull straight off or it should unscrew counter clockwise. What is the model number of the machine?

It's a wfs1072aw-7.5 The knob can do selections by turning either way so it does not unscrew.

I tried to pull up that model # from the parts supplier website that I use and it is showing as a bad model number

SOURCE: How to remove the washer cycle selection/start-stop knob on a Whilpool Heavy Duty Thin Twin stacked washer dryer

I believe the selector knob on a Whirpool just has to be turned counter-clockwise with the selector pushed in. It will spin off the shaft and then the outer indicator dial will pull off. The shaft also has a keyed slot that will only allow the dial to be removed and installed one way, so there should be no question as to how it goes back on.

Was there a reason as to why you are removing the washer selector knob? If this is a simple matter of replacing a broken water temperature selector, you shouldn't have to remove any of the control knobs to gain access to the selector. The entire front panel comes off by removing the screws holding it in place. That way you can access the broken selector from behind the front panel much easier. Just remove the panel right above the washer top (under the dryer) and it should expose the front panel mounting screws. Remove these screws and the front panel comes off. Just make sure the unit is unplugged before you begin. I hope this helps you. Let me know if you need further assistance.

SOURCE: Broken knob on GE washer

There are four separate parts that make up the knob dial. You can pull off the knob if you use a screwdriver/pliers to remove the clip holding it on. Check if the mounting areas appear stripped or broken. There should also be a compression ring in the mounting hole on the back of the knob. That's what may be broken or stripped. These are all parts that you can get from a local parts store (check the phone book) and you can do it yourself. Any of those parts should cost less than $10. The bad news is if you stripped the pole coming out of the timer assembly. You would need to replace the entire assembly which costs about $130. If you call a GE repairman, you are looking at $89.95 or more just to have them show up. If it is still under warranty, there is no charge. You can call them to verify this:

Why can't I hear the timer ticking?

The timer, if it's the mechanical type that you have to push in the knob to select cycles, then pull out to start, is *not* repairable. From what you are describing, it sounds like the internal mechanism had broken and the timer needs to be replaced. There is a specific, small procedure for removing the dial and replacing it on the new timer--if you are unsure on how to do this, get a qualified tech to do it--otherwise you run the real risk of breaking the mechanism in the new timer. I hope I helped you!

Front loading whirlpool machine WFS1072AW which needs pump clean

WFS1072AW has a clip in panel at the bottom across the front.
Removing this will reveal a black plug on the right.
Unscrew this and water will gush out along with (hopefully) the offending coins.

Wash cycle dial wont turn...will still push in and pull to start

We have a GE WJRR4170 washer, with the same problem. At first I thought I might have to unscrew the entire control panel just to replace the knob. However, replacing the knob turns out to be easy.

Right behind the knob, holding it in place, is a nylon/plastic retainer clip. If you pull out the knob (into the "start" position), you will get easier access to the retainer clip. You can use a flathead screwdriver to push the clip out. The knob then will slide easily off the metal stem. A GE replacement knob costs $9 or $10, depending on the source.

Shame on GE, but the knob is designed terribly. The part of it that engages the dial has eight, flimsy plastic teeth. At any time, four of these are supposed to engage four little slots in the dial. However, the way the knob is designed, there will be a lot of wear and tear on these plastic teeth, so they'll wear out on every single machine.

Good luck to the many people who will have this problem!
