SOURCE: John Deere L120 transmission high pitch noise and no forward move

Try jacking the unit up. Start it up and try moving pushing the forward and reverse back and forth and see if it does it then. It sounds like an oil way in the hydrostatic unit has a check valve stuck. Of course make sure that the fluid lever is up. Hope this will help you. donnyb60

SOURCE: The recoil starter on my Briggs & Stratton not engaging flywheel

Andy, Hi, well I would start at the Starter myself, usually the thing called the "Bendix" spring jams up and stops it dead. Pull of the Starter, and power it up, off the unit. This will show you if it snaps in and out.
Sometimes a few judicious whacks with a soft hammer will sometimes free up the spring, if thats is indeed what's wrong. Anyway try that first. before any disassembly.
Make sure the Motor CAN actually be turned, by turning the flywheel, this should show you if the Motor is "Free" enough to move.
Also check ALL electrical connection to the starter. Use a meter and see if you are actually getting a voltage to the starter too. make sure your starter battery is good too.

Replaced the starter on a john deer d110 riding mower and it engages the flywheel then it gets stuck

if it gets stuck on the flywheel it may not be the right tooth count. or it may need a shim put between the starter and the engine block to separate the two

My John Deere garden tractor with a Briggs and Stratton V twin 18 hp engine won't start? I changed the starter but the gear just busted. The flywheel does turn, with a little effort. Any ideas?

Michael, if the briggs is overhead valves, it may need valve adjusted so engine will turn easier. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Is the #1 cylinder on a 1941 John Deere 2 cylinder engine closest to the radiator

I am not familliar with the LA model, but in my youth [58 years ago] used to drive an AR with two cyl motor, side by side and flywheel on LH side. The flywheel had timing marks for TDC on the inside edge.
Otherwise remove a spark plug and take a soft bronze welding rod and insert so you can gently wind it to TDC position. If you open the bleed tap on other cylinder you can tell when it is near TDC. Other cylinder is 180 degrees around the flywheel. They are mechanically balanced, that is why they go Trut, trut.

I got a john deere gator 4x4 hpx, it will not run . its geting gas the plugs are getting fire , compression is 180 psi both cyl. how do i check timming? kawasaki twin cyl.

Remove flywheel shroud to see your timing marks, they will be 90 degrees apart on face of flywheel.Use timing light on flywheel as you look directly at it from the side.when light flashes you should see the marks lined up with arrow at the center top of block breather cover. If you find that your timing is off there are only 2 things that it can be-FLYWHEEL KEY or the computer located at the rear of engine.I have only had 2 machines where the timing was off exactly 90 degrees and the computer had to be replaced both times.
