Question about John Deere EZtrak Z225 Zero-Turn Riding Mower

1 Answer

John Deere Z225 trouble starting - turning the key to start, you hear the starter engage. The engine trys to turn over but struggles. Sounds like the battery is low. Bought a new battery, charged it then tried it. Same result. Tried jumping ito off with my truck. It started and ran fine. The next time I went to start it - same thing again. Tried to jump it off but no luck. Could I have another bad battery. The battery CCA is almost twice what it calls for. Thoughts?

The symptoms described may indicate a bad starter. First check all connections from the battery to ground and from the battery to starter You may want to have the starter tested at Advance Auto or Auto Zone. It will need to be removed from the mower, and I am not sure if Auto Zone, Advance Auto can test small mower starters. They test the starter under load, so if you remove the starter and hook it up to a battery, it will run probably, but it will not indicate whether the starter is good or bad. It needs to be tested under load. Good luck.....

SOURCE: I have a john deere 6400 that wont start from cold

i had the same problem, it is most likely that your fuel lines are leaking and fuel pump in tank is weak
when the tractor sits for a while the fuel drains back into the tank, thus your injection pump has no fuel in it.i solved it by replacing all the lines and i added electric fuel pump on outside of tank and connected the power to key, when i start the tractor i turn key on for a minuet or so than start the engine ,it solved the problem.

SOURCE: John Deere 165 will not

"One click" tells me it's a connection issue. Remove and wire brush the ground and battery cable connections at the battery, chassis, starter and starter solenoid.

SOURCE: have a john deere sabre

Some mowers have a mowing reverse safety switch. That safety will kill the mower if you try to reverse with the deck engaged. Some mowers even have an override button that has to be held while backing up. As for the battery thing, no matter how much you charge a bad battery you will not get it to start a mower if it has a bad cell or two. I would use a multimeter to check battery voltage, but the end result would still be the same, replace the battery.

I hope this gets you going again.

I have a John Deere z225 it will start up but when I engage it CUT off

loose or malfunctioning safety mechanism under seat OR something (twine, wire, cloth material, etc. is fouling the spindle, making it impossible to turn the blade, thus killing the engine, OR a stripped or broken wire in the wiring harness before it makes connection with the seat safety connection.

John Deere Z225 starting problem. The solonoid only clicks when I turn the key.I replaced the battery, the starter, the ignition switch and the starter solonoid!

With everything you have done only 2 things come to mind.
1) Safety switch open or not functioning.
2) Engine seized.

My John Deere z225 was operating normally until my son snagged an old carpet and stalled the engine. Pulled the carpet out, now the engine turns over, but won't engage. Help?

If it is engine that is not starting you may may have a sheared flywheel.

Depending how that Briggs 310000 series may have the key that shears easily. The flywheel and crankshaft were redesign in July 2012 because of this. If your engine is before this then a steel key and torquing the flywheel to 110 ft-lbs should solve this.

Motor is locked up wii\ll not turn over

Have you checked battery voltage and amperage? Also check starter solenoid for 12 volts while trying to start. Starter could also be weak.

Either timing is off or you may have turn key off with engine hot and running in high speed. Always return engine to idle for at least 30-45 seconds before turning engine off.
