Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

My Fisher Pakel E440T freezer and fridge slowly warmed up and I had to manualy defrost it. The freezer fan is working and I feel it will do the same again. From previous experience with another brand of fridge I suspect it may be the defrost timer unit but I cant locate it. My model has not got a kick unit in the front, the only access to working parts is at the back of the freezer or at the back of the cabinet at the bottom. There is some sort of an electronic control box labelled P42 STG4. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Scotty 19 March 2004

SOURCE: Hi, I have a Fisher and Paykel E402B

Your automatic defrosting circuit is not working. There are several components that can stop the defrosting process:
1. The defrost control
2. The defrost element
3. The defrost thermostat

Any one of the 3 can open cause the automatic defrosting process NOT to work.

If the defrost control fails, it just stops defrosting and ice builds up on the evaporator coils.
If the defrost element fails it will go into the defrost cycle and not cool again until the internal temps reach 60 Deg F.
If the defrost thermostat fails in the open position the heater will not heat up and the freezer will ice up.

There are 6 models of the R402B so I was not able to narrow down a source your exact parts data.
However, if the defrost control has failed the good news is the most expensive one is $18.95 AUD

Hopefully this gives you something to go on. I think it will either be the defrost control or the thermostat. If you can locate the defrost control turn it until it clicks ONCE and see if the unit shuts off and completes a defrost cycle. If it heats up but does not complete the defrost cycle again your looking at a problem with the defrost thermostat. If it does not heat at all then the problem is the heating element.

The defrost control will have 2 sloped tabs on it so that you can only turn the control one direction. The defrost control dial with the tabs will be no larger than 1/2 inch in diameter.

You most likely will have to make a "contact" enquiry at either site above. For the defrost tmer, heating element or the defrost thermostat.

Fridge not cooling, Freezer is working (upside down fridge/freezer)

We experienced a smilar problem with your Fisher & Paykle fridge/freezer.
The fan that sends cold air to the Fridge section of the appliance didnt appear to be working leaving the Fridge poorly cooled.
I suggest the first step is to turn the fridge off and leave it to totally defrost.
Build up in ice in the freezer section seemed to have an impact on the proper operation of the fan which seems to relie on a thermostat for its operation.
Having defrosted and cleaned the fridge the problem was solved.
The fans have a delay before switching on after the door is closed. Place a magnet over the door sensor switch and wait to see if the fan works.
The problem could be that the unit has iced over itself over a period of time and defrosting it could solve the problem.

There are three reasons for your fridge problem. 1. Malfunction of defrosting. 2.Gas chocked.3.Thermostat setting.
1. The freezer can be set to atemperature between.

I have an active smart fridge freezer. The freezer seems ok but the fridge has stopped working but it doesent get cold. how can it be fixed. It is only 18 months old.

Check fan in the freezer
Also check auto defrost (ice on the freezer coils anot allowing
air to the fridge.)
If so go to appliance parts store to learn the parts to fix auto defrost.

E372B FISHER & PAYKEL FRIDGE WARM

I'd say you most likely need a new defrost element and evaporator Chassis. You'll most likely find there's a big lump of ice behind the evaporator chassis in the freezer inturn blocking the fridge vent or the defrost element is burnt out icing up te Evaporator. It pays to replace both anyway you'll need to unplug the unit and leave the doors opens for 48hrs to defrost it first. cheers

My fridge (E440T but I believe the E522B is similar) had a broken fan wire and i had to pull off the rear panel and re-solder a wire. REFRIG E402BRE

My fridge (E440T but I believe the E522 is similar) has EXACTLY the same symptoms and the reason was a broken fan wire in the freezer compartment (behind the rear panel). The fridge compartment works by drawing air from the freezer and blowing it into the fridge compartment. If the fan in the freezer doesn't work, then your fridge won't get cold (there is another fan in the fridge compartment so it will stay a little cold but not enough).

If you're game, I created a document for others to follow if interested at http://mail.accentis.com.au/downloads/misc/How%20I%20fixed%20my%20Fisher%20and%20Paykel%20Fridge%20Active%20Smart%20Fridge.pdf
Thanks to all postings on this site - it really helped a lot, had me some fun and saved money!
