Fan and thermastat do not work

I have a Rinnai Model REH-20TB-P unvented space heater. The fan does not turn on and the top half of the bricks will not light. We have to turn the heater on and off because the thermastat does not work. Would like to get it working properly.

SOURCE: Heater goes off

Possibly A bad thermocoupler. It is the part that looks like a stiff solid copper wire with on end sticking in the flame of the pilot light and is a safety feature if the pilot goes out it starts to cool and the resistance changes back you the module and the module shuts the gas off. I have seen these go intermediately faulty in waterheaters and do just what you described.

SOURCE: my rinnai 556fa propane heater

I had the identical trouble with my Rinnai 431F just now & read the unanswered posts.

I checked my intake & exhaust & found them connected & intact then went out to check the exterior vent assembly. The "bell" or dome was almost entirely clogged with ice.

I suspect the 60 - 76 lights flashing means insufficient combustion air.

Anyway, I took a hair dryer to it & in 10 minutes it was working as well as ever.

This won't help you October posters but if anyone else has this problem in the future I would start with the outside vent assembly. Get a good look right up inside because I would have missed this ice if I didn't get up close with a flashlight.

Here's a good source for manuals too...

SOURCE: Pilot light will not stay lite?

For some reason it seems the safety protection is activated? Perhaps a faulty thermocouple? Usually that anyway. Or electronics have failed.

SOURCE: Rinnai RCE-606A vent free space heater, the Lock

Hold the lock button down for approximately one second to switch between locked and unlock. If it is locked when you turn it on you will need to do this first

Heater sparks but won't light model#reh-18-n

Bob, there are several reasons for what you described:

The gas line shutoff valve is turned OFF. The unit is not getting gas for ignition.
The pilot is clogged and needs to be cleaned.
The Child Lock Out button has been activated.

The above are the top 3 things that usually cause what you have described. Troubleshoot those and you will more than likely solve the problem.

Good luck. I hope this helped steer you in the right direction.

The pilot doesn't stay on. the flame doesn't extend out as far as it normally does. The model number is Reh-30dt-p.

The pilot light will extinguish when you turn the valve to on for main burner... cause is a bad thermocouppler. it's yhe bulb the poilot light heats up.

Converting Rinnai REH-25-N to LP

Typically, an unvented heater or gas log cannot be converted, mostly for safety reasons and it is usually cost prohibitive. Some newer heaters come with both Natural Gas and Propane components and have to be set up one way or the either.
It would be better to sell your old heater and get one with the proper gas type.

Rinnai fan stops turning.

You can reach the fan wheel by using a can of compressed air normally used to clean your compute keyboard. Make sure you hold a vacuum wand close to the heater when doing this to collect the debris. Using a small coffee stir straw, lubricate the end of the fan motor shaft with light motor oil. This will keep the motor alive for a bit longer.
