Question about Sharp El-531x Scientific Calculator Green Bp Package Of 5

My friend has a Casio calculator

Did it occur to you that calculators from different manufacturers may implement different features? Look at your calculator and see if there are keys that have letters next to them. The EL-531 family of calculators has several temporary memory locations where you can store values: A, B, C, D, X ad Y. To access these locations you press [ALPHA] followed by the key that has a letter marking near it.

**A general suggestion is to read the calculator's instruction pages.**

if you were trying to work out 3% of 50 for example, put 3 in the calculator, the press the shift button and if you look at the colored bits of writing above the general numbers or letters, there should be a percent sign somewhere. Press this so you have 3%, then type the multiplication sign. Finally type the 50 so you have 3%X50 they = to get your answer.

It is always risky to try to answer a question about a calculator of an undisclosed model.

To be able to symbolic algebra (with variables), one needs a calculator with CAS (or Computer Algebra System). These types of calculators are special graphing calculators. ( Not all graphing calculators have a CAS.)

To get back to your question: No, you cannot do algebra with a mere scientific calculator even a recent one. All you can do is define an equation with variables A,B,C,D, Y and X and press the Solve button if it exists. The calculator will ask: Solve for X?. If you say yes, you will be prompted for the values of all letters (A,B,C,D, Y) in your equation and the calculator will search for the value of X, that makes the left side of your equation equal to the right side.

It will display the X-value and the difference L-R.

Try resetting the calculator. There should be a reset button on the underside of the machine. Press it with a pen and that should clear the E that is on your display.
