Question about TechSmith Camtasia Studio for PC

Camasia 8 Recorder won't work on Windows 7

I had to reformat and reload my PC. I then installed the Camtasia 7 that I purchased a couple years ago and then installed the Camtasia 8 that I recently got. However, when I try to run Camtasia Recorder 8 either from the taskbar icon or from the program files, nothing happens. I checked the processes and there is no reference to camtasia there either. I am running Windows 7 Pro with 8 GB Ram and a Quad Core processor. What can I do to get this to work? Thanks in advance Larry

Delete 7 and 8 but then only reinstall 8 and see if that works because they might be screwing with each other.

make sure you delete all the files because even after using the uninstall it can leave extra folders and files

if this does not solve it tell me

I used revouninstaller to uninstall both Camtasia 7 and Camtasia 8 and then reinstalled Camtasia 8 by itself.

Unfortunately, that didn't fix the problem.

I can access the studio, but I can't get the recorder to work either from the shortcut or by clicking on record the screen in the studio setup.

  • Bryan Perry Mar 19, 2014

so u can open up the studio but the only thing not working is the recorder

  • Bryan Perry Mar 19, 2014

try to find the the application for the recorder like the program u would click to open up just the recorder not the shortcut and dont try to open it from studio just find out where it is on your computer and try to open it also if that dosnt work try to run it as administrator if that dosnt work tell me this is helping narrow down the possibilities.

  • Bryan Perry Mar 19, 2014

also before u try all of what i said above enless you have already the proscess for the recorder would be camrecorder.exe so check your processes for that because you may have not noticed it is the recorder because it does not say camtasia anywhere so check your processes tab for that

  • Bryan Perry Mar 20, 2014

Well that was the last thin I was going to suggest because usually it auto updates but no problem :)

SOURCE: Memory Problems

The clip can be recovered if you open the temporary directory where Camtasia stores the raw captures in AVI format. The path to the temporary directory can be found by opening the Camtasia Recorder > Tools > Options > Program > Temporary file folder (I'm using v.5 so it may be a little different in other versions).

I've found that there's a certain workflow that seems to work best and you can avoid accidentally erasing your temporary files and having to start your capture session over from the beginning...

  1. Stop Camtasia Recorder - Pressing the Stop button on the Recorder likely won't work, so open the Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE) and select "CamRecorder.exe" from the Processes tab and click "End Process". Don't open Camtasia Studio right away after doing this step - You'll likely be prompted to recover the recording and in my experience Camtasia hasn't done a very good job at being able to do this successfully and you may end up losing your temp files.
  2. Recover your raw capture files - Navigate to the path where Camtasia stores its Temp files (look above for instructions). Typically, there will be a folder titled "CamCapture{random string of numbers/letters}" - look for a folder with a date modified attribute of the date/time you were working on your project. In that folder, there will likely be several audio and video files as well as an XML data file. The video files will all be 1GB apiece as Camtasia splits the capture into chunks and then pieces them back together to create one continuous file. Cut and paste the files from this folder into a new location outside of the Temp directory. The most important one is the FileWriter{random string}.avi as this is the pieced together file - It will have the largest file size.
  3. Add your media files to the clip bin/timeline - Start a new Camtasia project and import the FileWriter{xxx}.avi clip into the Clip Bin and drag it onto the timeline. Now all of your video/audio should be recovered and available for you to edit. If you have particularly long clips, you may want to check how the audio syncs with the the video towards the end of the clip. If it's messed up at all, you may want to try adding the smaller, chunked recording segments sequentially onto the timeline to see if that helps. If the FileWrite{xxx}.avi clip is good though, you can delete all of the other smaller audio and video clips associated with the capture from your pc to save space - just keep the FileWriter{xxx}.avi clip - the XML can be deleted too.
Good luck - We've had the same trouble here and we use Camtasia almost everyday. In my experience, this seems to happen more frequently when we capture larger dimensions - especially if the capture contains full motion video (as opposed to just screen captures of a product demo or something) and we always seem to have trouble when capturing things that play back FLV or SWF clips at a higher bitrate. This issue is also described in TechSmith's Camtasia knowledge base.

Is there a download or disc I can get to use one of these computers to work with "your product"?

Support for Windows XP ceased a couple of years ago. Only Windows 7, 8 and 10 are supported.

It is very unlikely that a computer running XP will run Windows 10. It may run 7, albeit slowly.

You refer to 'your product'? We are Fixya, not Microsoft or any other software vendor.

The Toshiba user's guide and support app on windows 8 start screen is not working. it says critical error

Windows 8 sucks. Have had so many issues with it myself. Sounds like the load may be corrupted, the easy is call Toshiba tech support, the hard is reformat the hardrive and reload windows but I would suggest Windows 7 over 8 any day.

Always booting but unable to load untill iremove the battery to get it off

That means your operating system in unstable. First of all you need to identify what operating system you are using for example Windows 7 or 8 or XP. Then Get a CD for that operating system. Boot from the Operating system CD and select Repair so that the machine can be repaired. During the repair process your machine will restart a couple of times so do not freak out it will be okay. But if it does not work after repair, then you will have to consider what we call wipe and reload. In wipe and reload, we only save all your data and reformat and reconfigure your computer to its factory settings

Camtasia Studio 8 Only Opens Once per Start-up

what u need to do is if you have windows press ctrl shift esc and the task manager should pop up go to processes then on the list you would see Camtasia studio right click and select end process or if u see the name more than once end the process of them all the reason you have to do this is because for some reason the first time you open and close it it dos not actually completely close witch then gets in a glitchy state to where you can not open in again but by ending the process u should be able to open it again
