Games will cause more heat as they put your components under more stress. Make sure that you are not blocking any of the vents and also, check them for dust. Give them a vacuum if they are dusty. It sounds like there is not enough ventilation, which causes your computer to overheat and then to shut down.
It is probably due to overheating. Try and keep the laptop on flat surface. Laptops overheat when placed on beds sofas when you block vent hole etc. To be fair you should take laptop to a professional so they can clean it inside. One thing you can do is blasting it with compressed air in vent holes and near the fan. Remember to do it while laptop is off and battery taken out. If you feel competent enough take it a bit apart and clean it with small soft brush. Good luck!
Sorry you are having troule. It sounds as if it is getting hot and protecting itself. Games are very cpu intensive and this causes heat. The cheap fix is an under cooler. This is a cooler the laptop sits on. I have seen them at Best Buy for under $20
I too have also bought the aspire 5738. Mine was also hanging, eventually i sent it back to acer. The mother board was replaced as it had a faulty north bridge on it. If your unit is still in warranty get it done as soon as possible.
