Lets backup a little, the top burner is a manual light that works ok. It is the oven that will not light. Sorry about the confusion.

Magic Chef Range in camp trailer, pilot light in the oven works however, the burner will not light when turned on. No gas flows. Propane furnace works ok and the propane bottle is full. The surface burners are match light and work ok. If you need the model number/serial I will need to go to the trailer's storage unit.

On a pilot ignition system the pilot flame must be lit for the oven burner to receive gas. If the pilot will not stay lit, there may be a problem in the oven thermostat (which supplies gas flow to the pilot) or the gas tubing leading to it and/or the pilot itself may be plugged with cobwebs, grease, etc.

If the pilot IS lit but the oven burner is not lighting, the pilot flame will need to be inspected as the thermostat is turned on. If the pilot is not extending when the thermostat is tuned to ON, the oven thermostat may be defective. If the pilot is extending but the oven gas valve is not opening, that oven safety valve may be defective or its sensor bulb may be out of position on the pilot or just dirty causing it to not sense the proper temperature of the pilot flame. A dirty pilot can also cause a reduced size pilot flame so the oven safety valve can not sense the proper temperature to open.

When there’s no heat at all in the oven, the first thing to check should be the timer controls. An automatic cycle setting could be preventing the oven from lighting. If you have a self-cleaning range, make sure the door is in the unlock position. You will also want to check that all knobs are in the correct positions. If you have an Electronic Control, you can try unplugging the range for 30 seconds or so before you plug it back in. This can reset an Electronic Control. Make sure the gas is on to the range.

Most times when an oven won't bake, it's because the bake ignitor has gotten weak or it’s just burned out. The ignitor is a small round or rectangular device located near the burner. The ignitor is wired in series with the gas safety valve.

When the ignitor is cold, it has a lot of resistance, meaning it gets most of the electricity in the circuit. As it heats up, its resistance drops. This allows enough electricity to heat the bi-metal strip in the gas safety valve, which then allows gas to be released to the burner assembly. The gas then gets ignited by the glow-bar ignitor. The ignitor glows the whole time the burner is on, keeping the gas safety valve open. The thermostat senses when the desired temperature is reached, and cuts off electricity to the gas safety valve and ignitor.

If this ignitor is weak or burned out, it won’t heat enough to lower its resistance to the point where the bi-metal strip gets enough electricity to heat up and allow the gas safety valve to open, and it will not release gas to the burner assembly. When this happens, you may have to replace either the ignitor or the gas safety valve. Many times it’s the ignitor that is to blame, and cheaper to replace.
The gas safety valve does precisely what the name implies. It prevents gas from being introduced to the burner when there’s a possibility that it won’t get ignited properly.

There are a few different variations in their operation, but the purpose is always the same, to prevent accidents. If the glow-bar or spark systems are in proper working order, you may have a faulty gas safety valve. Check it for continuity. A faulty selector switch or thermostat could also be your problem. Check the selector switch for continuity between pairs of contacts. If none, replace the switch. For the thermostat, consult your wiring diagram when testing it for continuity. If there is no continuity at any of the contact terminal points, you must replace the thermostat.

With credit to jsrock516, I suspect you may have a bad igniter. They will still glow nice and hot, but if they are weak the gas valve will not open. This is actually a safety feature. Depending on which type you have, the glow bar igniter is supposed to draw a certain current potential before the gas valve will open. I would try to to determine if the igniter is good or bad before proceeding with a gas valve replacement. Generally, the igniter is a common fail item.

I have a magic chef furnace, armstrong series if the pilot light and ignightor both work but the burners wont light is it possible the thermocuppler bad?

The thermocouple keeps the pilot light on. If the flame blows out it shuts off the gas to the pilot lite only the board that has the igniter on it supplies power to open the main burner as long as the igniter is operating. Sounds like the gas valve is nor working.

Magic chef gas range top burners will not stay light

This problem is almost always due to a defective gas valve. If you decide to replace the part yourself remember safety 1st, turn off the gas and disconnect power to the range.

My Magic Chef is a 1979 gas oven and it won't light

OK, you will need to watch the pilot when you turn the temp control. It should get longer and give heat to a coupler that should be attached to your gas valve. If the pilot does not extend when you turn the temp control then the temp control is bad. if it does then your valve is bad.

I hope I got the right kind of machine doing this blind.

Magic chef oven pilot light out

Hi, If the oven has a standing pilot too, Open the bottom door and locate the main burner. Follow the burner toward the rear of the oven and there will be a flame switch attatched to the burner. Hold the flame near the flame switch and the gas should ignite.
Some model do not have a standing pilot in the oven. Please get me your model number off the label located around the opening of the lower door so I can look this up and instruct you better.

Hi,

The most common problem for gas surface burners is that they get gas but don't light. This is generally caused by dirt or grease splatters on the burner itself. Residential-grade range/stove burners are round and have small holes around their perimeter to allow gas to flow out and create a round flame. The gas coming from these holes is often ignited by a small vertical row of holes on the side of the burner. If these vertical holes are clogged or obstructed, the gas can't ignite.

The solution is to clean the burners thoroughly. Use a toothpick to clear the small vertical holes, then allow the burner to dry completely and try lighting it again. If it doesn't light immediately, repeat the procedure

or

May be the ignitor, replaced mine and it fixed it. A gas company guy told me that is common in Magic Chef ranges.

The pilot light must be lit and stay lit before you will have any propane coming into the oven. This is a safety feature.
