Have MTd 42'riding lawnmower. It was running well, I turned it off the machine, took break and now it just clicks at the solenoid. I have replaced solenoid, battery, and now it still clicks. What do you suggest I do?

I took the starter off yesterday and it appeared to be ok. I did not test it however. by jumping directly to the starter, are you talking about directly from the batttery to the starter?

I hooked my starter directly up to my pick-up and it ran and mowed like a champ. I also tried turning the screen before that and it started. After mowing however, it went back to clicking at the solenoid again. I think maybe one of the safety switches may be bad. What do you think?

Try jumping directly to the starter. If it still won't turn, try placing your hands flat on the screen and turn it back and forth sharply to try to dislodge the starter gear from the flywheel. They can, on rare occasion, get wedged in the flywheel and not turn. If none of the above work, I'd remove the starter and bench test it.

By bench test I mean, hook jumper cables to it. With cables hooked to + and - on an external battery, hook the positive to the terminal the starter wire was attached to. Touch the negative to the mounting bracket. The starter should spin and throw the gear up. If it does nothing, check your connections again. If still nothing, your starter is defective.

Try tracing the positive battery cable from the positive side to the solenoid
to make sure those connections are clean and tight. Then from the solenoid to the starter. Clean and tight. Last of all please check the Ground to frame connection.
