Question about Hayward SAND FILTER, PRO SERIES
We have the same problem: water comes out of the waste line when the valve is set to filter.
Open the valve and you will likely find the gasket, which looks alot like a "wheel" with spokes, is out of place and/or damaged. You may be able to reseat it in to the groove it fits in or you may need to replace it.

water flows then the flow should be good, if not the inlet valve is bad or there
is dirt in the filter. Also check the flow at the inlet of the water line. After the wash the drain valve will be activated, the water is allowed to come
in to rinse and then finally the drain valve/pump activated so as to drain off
all the water.
To get an idea of how to remove and reset the filter and drain pump the following video will be useful.
