Question about Linksys 8-Port (SD208) 8x10/100 Mbps Networking Switch

1 Answer

I just need to connect 2 PCs via the Linksys 8-port switch, no internet connection. One is running XP & the other is running Vista. Both plugged into the numbered ports but I can't get the PCs to see each other.

If you are not connected to the Internet and both PC's are trusted and you want to network them. The easiest solution would be to disable the firewall on both machines since there's no need to block anything. You may also need to enable file sharing on the Vista machine under networking. If this is going to be a permanent setup and you don't plan on adding any other devices I would exchange the Switch w/ a crossover cable connected into each other to save on electricity.

You do not need 2 routers to connect to the internet infact you need only 1. having 2 conflicts with pcs and causing them not to work.

From the wall you have your cable fro your internet that plugs into your modem, from the modem it plugs into the router by ethernet cable to the uplink slot and then your computers connect to the router. Most routers can connect 4 computers at once. If running them all wirelessly just reboot them and they should connect automatically. If your wiring them plug them into the back by an ethernet cable in the slots 1 for the first PC, 2 for the second so on and so on. You may have to cold boot everything at first meaning shut down all the computers, unplug the router and modem. Then Plug in the modem let it boot up, plug in the router let it boot up then the pcs.

If you need more hook ups if 4 isnt enough yo uneed a switch or access point not another router.

Let me know If this helps and if I can help further.

Hi sir i have a problem that  how to share the individual internet connection on other pcs

To share the induvidual internet connection with other pc s you need the following:
1. The pc which owns the internet it need an ethernet connection too.
2. The other pc's which dont have internet connection it needs
ethernet connection too.
3. You need an equipment which connects the internet pc and
other pcs. It called Ethernet switch.

Linksys company has a good product, which can connect 4 pc together, called linksys Wrtg54gl. It not only a small switch
it also has the capability to connect wifi devices.
Buy this router connect the pc-s to thos router with ethernet switch. You need to set up ip addresses for the pc-s.
The whole procedure is well written in the Linksys admin manual.
I hope it helps.

Here is the router manual:
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/wrt54g_ug.pdf

If you dont need the wifi router (you dont need wireless connection buy this model:
Linksys BEFSR41

If you need to connect more than 4 pc it requires a new solution.
If all pc are connected with ethernet together, you need another solution.

If you has a problem with this write to the forum, i will respond you.

Setting up a lan and internet thru MTNL triband

I suggests you to go for Linksys. It's a good product when it comes to wireless internet. Linksys router must be plugged in to the modem. On the back of the router, you can plug the vista on port number 1 then your win XP machine can go wireless at the same time.

3 netopia 2247 routers daisychained

How far are you running the CAT5 cables from house to house?   CAT5e only has a solid range of about 150ft, and anything near 100ft is pushing it.  You may also need to use CROSSOVER cables when plugging routers into other routers.
Also, who has the actual internet connection?  I'm assuming House 2 does.  One big problem is a router is your Gateway address.  And, if house 2 is the only one with a valid Internet connection (via DSL or Cable, etc), then the router in house 2 is the only "true gateway".  And, all 3 houses need to be in the same physical network (i.e. 192.168.1.0 range or whatever), and all computers should have the same Gateway address...which would be the IP address of the router in House 2.
What you really need in this situation is 1 router and 2 switches.  Put the router in House 2 and put switches in House 1 and 3.  That would be the best way to handle this problem.  It would also end your connectivity problems.
Cheers!

Wireless internet connection

I may be able to help with this...but I need a detailed description of how you have things connected between the XP desktop, the cable, modem, the Linksys router, and the laptop. Also, is the Linksys router new?

Typically, the wan port on the wireless router connects directly to the cable modem with a cat5 network cable....then the desktop pc connects to the router...on port 1 for example...with a similar cable. Once the wireless router is set up properly, the laptop should then be able to connect using wireless.
