Intermittant no spark. Cruising along and shuts off like someone flipped a kill switch

Just purchased. Driving along and without any warning, it dies. No sputter or hesitation. Just like someone flipped a swich. Drove 2 miles and it happened. waited a bit and it started. Drove a 1/2 mile and shut it off. 10 min later wouldnt start. 30 min.later it fired right up. Drove it home ( about 20 miles on highway) it never missed a beat. I went out 20 min later... no go. The next day fired right up. Made it a mile - died. A good sumaritan towed me to my destination. After I unhooked the chain, it fired right up. Someone said ignition control module?

Gotta be either fuel, fire, compression or timing, so next time it dies, spray a little starting fluid into the intake, if it starts right back up -fuel problem-probably stopped up fuel filter, bad fuel pump. If not, remove a spark plug wire and attach old spark plug , lay it on a grounded metal part of the engine or frame , have someone try to start it, watch to see if the plug is firing.

I was driving and the van just died. it still turns over just doesn't fire. i'm guessing it lost spark or gas. nothing happened, no warning signs. it just died. fuel pump is 1.5 years old. whats a fast...

Have someone turn the key on while you have you ear close to the fuel tank. You should hear a 1-3 second whirr as the pump builds up pressure. If no sound you can tap on the tank with a rubber or dead blow hammer to see if the pump is stuck. This trick will only work so many times before complete failure! Fords also had a fuel pump shut off switch, after Pintos started blowing up. Most cars had them in the trunk under the plastic covers. I'm not sure on the vans. Look for a small black box with 2 wires near the tank on the inside of the van. You can cut out the switch and tie the wires together with a wire nut and black tape or shrink tube to bypass the switch.

Driving ,cruising 45 to 55 get into it just a little to get around someone, pull out to pass engine dies no warning spit sputter nothing just dies.put in neutral (car still rolling) turn key off we go....

What I am going to suggest is going to seem unrelated but I will give you the reason to try it.

If you have a separate switch for Traction control, turn it off and see if the problem goes away. The Traction Control is made to kill the engine and automatically apply the rear brakes. The sensors can be blinded by rust and brake debris. At steady freeway speeds you may be drawing the junk away temporarily from the wheel sensors.

Usually the rear emergency brakes will supply a lot of the debris and coat the sensors. Also you can get a free scan for the car at Autozone or Oreillys and sometimes they have the special scanners for the Suspension and Traction Control. Since you also have a problem with the engine I know they can scan for that problem. Good luck and I would be interested to know the outcome of this problem so I can use it to help others.

Hard starting, dies when throttle opened quickly.

Sounds like a kill switch is going bad or ignition wire getting grounded along the frame or elsewhere. A bad ignition switch can do the same thing. Check the side stand kill switch if your bike has one. Check all electrical connectors. A loose or dirty connection can screw up the works.
