Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera
When I connect my camera to the computer, a ballon appears on the screen saying that there is an error with the new hardware
I have to ask 1st, why are you connecting your camera direct? Is it to download your pictures? Anyway it should'nt matter. Did you download the Nikon Transfer and or ViewNX CD that the camera came with? If not, that may be the cause. Another thing is your computer operating system being Vist and or XP with or without SP2 and if Mac it should be 10.3.9, 10.4.11 or 10.5.2

Did you install the driver ?
Okay remove the software via add and remove programs in the control panel,
now load the software , do not connect the hardware e.g the camera yet once the software loaded plug in the camera .
