I had this issue, so I removed drive two and it boots up faster again and the noise is gone. I checked the 40GB Drive I removed and it was going bad. What I did was replaced it with another drive, installed XP on it, and now I can boot from either drive but both are seperate OS's.

Cheers
Tim

Probably NOT the hard rive. More likely one of the cooling fans has collected a lot of dust and is out of whack. Mine did same. clicking sound especially after 3 -4 minutes after starting. (if it is a hard drive the ckicking will be continuous from mopment of strt up. Also hard drives that click don't last doing it for ANY length of time. If the make that kind of sound they die fast!

Usually the drive that does start to go bad will make a clicking sound or a loud whiring sound espically when it speeds up and slows down, and am fairly sure if you have s.m.a.r.t.s. enabled it will say to backup and replace the hd. if it is not enabled it is in the bios under a tab to enable and disable it. it is called s.m.a.r.t.s. status or hard drive status.(older laptops will most likely not have it) but yes, i would strongly recommend that you see about getting the hd replaced. you could even purchase a used hd from a local computer store or ebay to backup your current hard drive by using norton ghost or any other type of backup program or roxio backup. I have a clicking 500GB Fantom that I can not see in "My Computer" no drive letter exists.

Hello,

If you drive makes loud clicking sounds it is likely that the drive has experienced a "head crash"
and it is toast.

You van always take it to an expert but they charge a lot of money.

I work on drive all the time and I'd say it is 98% likely that it is toast.

Sorry about that.

It's not a good sign if a hard disk is making loud clicking noise. It means that the hard drive is about to give up. The clicking sound you can hear is caused by the arm of the hard disk knocking against other components in the hard drive. I recommend to back up your data as soon as possible.

Good luck,

Ryan

It sounds like your hard drive is slowly reaching the end of its life. How long have you had the hard drive? When you say system crash, was the computer accidentally bumped or moved whilst in operation? If this is the case then this can cause quite serious damage to a hard drive and the disks inside would likely be scratched. It sounds like you will have to replace the hard drive. If can purchase a drive and have someone with technical know how install it for you. Good luck. Andrew

If your drive is making whining and clicking sounds, then you have a mechanically damaged drive which had what we called a 'head crash' due to the drop!
If you can read/access the disk partitions/drives, I strongly suggest that you perform a full disk backup (with track error skipping) to another device. Also try a file by file copy to another drive (slow but you know exactly what is accessible).
You may want to try to use 'Spinrite' (Google and read about it first) to attempt to repair some of the issues but unfortunately, a disk 'head crash' is usually fatal physical condition and data recovery requires specialized equipment and is VERY expensive!
Hope it helps: let me know ho you go!

Does your pc make a different noise than usual when you turn it on? If it sounds like clicking (loud) then your hard drive has crashed. You will need to replace it.
