I have a similar problem my bro was playing call of duty 4 on my ps3 and now it wont play any games. when i put the game in the blue disc thing doesnt come up i tried restoring to the default settings but nothing worked. i havent tried playing movies yet

It could be your router or network settings for your internet. Do you use Port forwarding? The Playstation site tells you all the ports you need to use. Also try putting your playstation in a DMZ.
Playstation3 needs reliable, stable, and quite fast internet connection. Check with your internet service provider to get better speeds and this will solve your online gaming problems
maybe the tv you are using is not very well compatible with those game since they can be played in HD.try playing thme in another ps3 console or using another tv.
you meesed up your firmware. go on internet and search 2.40 firmware update ps3. download to memory stick and put in ps3 go to external devices click on flash drive do the update the ur done.
if it dont work, bring it to sony or place u bought it at. get a replacement.
