Trying to diagnose an internal engine smoke problem, 06 prius was working fine, all of a asudden i hear the gas engine come on and it sounds like valve or rocker noise, very lightly, i go to check the oil and white smoke comes out, same if i open the oil refill lid, am i right to say piston rings or is there something i dont know about these engines?

& smoke test the evap system, to find a
problem

Codes have nothing to do with installing parts

this sounds like you rings or valve seals are leaking into the cylinder the smoking for a time is the oil burning off check your oil to see if it's getting low this will confirm if these might be the issues

I am a fellow Prius owner, mine only has 8,000 miles though ;-) If I was you I'd just bite the bullet and take it to the dealer. Worst case is you're out the $100 or whatever they'd charge to diagnose the problem. You can always fix it yourself but if they do a proper diagnosis it could save you money in the long run. Does it sound like the noise is internal? You may also want to search or post at PriusChat.com, a Prius forum.p.s. Congrats on getting 189K miles on it already, these cars last a long time, I'm very happy with mine.
