Why did both battery cables melt on my MTD mower?

Original problem was mower wouldn't start. Changed the solenoid...mower started but wouldn't shut down using key switch...shut down on it's own when I got off the seat but restarted as soon as I sat down again. Changed solenoid again and battery...started up and could hear clicking noise when seated...continued to run with seat safety switch disengaged as I tried to locate the clicking sound which could be heard anytime there was pressure on the seat. Both battery cables melted before sound could be located but mower continued to run...had to pull the fuse to stop it. Is it possible that the solenoid wires were reversed. Battery was wired correctly. Also noticed the terminal that the red wire was connected to on the solenoid was heat damaged.

The solenoid doesn't care about polarity itself. As for the battery cables being it would have been a dead short to frame ground somewhere along the positive cable.

You have a dead short between the battery terminals leads so the full power of the battery is running through both leads. Just from your description it wouldn't be the seat frame cutting a battery cable would it?

Hi I need some help please my mower wont start I changed the solenoid and still wont start it just makes a clicking sound when I turn the key also the cables battery cables get hot any suggestions

Check to make sure the back of your key switch is clean and free of all dirt. DON'T clean with a wire brush with the battery connected. Either use a plastic bristled brush (stiff) or disconnect the battery. Also, I have seen the stator spike and melt wires together. Cut the zip-ties and pull the black wire isolation tubing off the wires to check for melted wires. Use your sense of smell to help you sniff along the wires and find tbe melt.

I have a Cub cadet LT 1024 which will not start. The solenoid clicks like it is trying and lights will come on but that is only reaction. Battery is brand new and hooked up properly.

solenoid clicks, only tess you the coil is working inside the solenoid. disconnect cable from battery to starter. with ohm meter check for continuty across main terminals of solenoid while holding key to start. if no continuity, solenoid is defective.

Mower will not start, battery cgarged up but onlhy

Check all the wiring connections on the starting system. Start at the battery. Both posts. Then, check where the ground goes to the body of the tractor. Make sure it's not rusty and making a good connection. Check the wire from the battery to the solenoid. If worse comes to worse, you can take a jumper cable and go from the battery + side and jump right to the starter post where an electrical cable connects. This will let the engine turn over, but make sure you have the mower in neutral and brakes set, with blades OFF!

What can make my MTD riding mower not crank, and melt the negative cable? The starter turns, and tries to start engine, almost made it one time, but within 20 secs or less I can smell burning, and the...

Either you are holding the key in the ON postion too long, or the starter has shorted out, remove starter for repair.

Does the negine turn freely or with alot more effort than before. If the latter then engine may be damaged. Need to check compression and try to turn over by hand without spark plug in.If you cannot turn over by hand, engine damaged.

Mtd lawn mower trys to start as soon as i hook up battery

Sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck in the start position. Tap it sharply and see if it still does it when you hook up the battery. You'll probably have to replace the solenoid.

Won't crank--some kind of electrical problem

Disconnect the (battery) starter cable and check with a multimeter the continuity of the starter relay thru the relay terminals which connect the battery to the starter (key will have to be turned to start) -- if you get continuity, it's likely not the relay, but I'm with you, it sure sounds like the relay (solenoid).

P.S. Running a starter directly off a charger is a good way to burn up a charger.
