It is possible that you have a vacuum problem. There could be hundreds of other causes, but start at the beginning and check for a perished rubber vacuum pipe.
Vacuum leaks could also occur between the carburetor and the intake manifold, but on a '86 model, just for fun check the play on the butterfly valve shaft.
Your car is 28 years old, and the butterfly shaft tends to wear out from years of acceleration and deceleration (throttle valve movement). If you do find excessive play on the butterfly shaft, you probably need to have the carb overhauled, or possibly less expensive, have it replaced.
If there is a large excess of fuel in the crankcase it may well be the carb needle leaking, the only way to check this is with a bulb pressure tester connected to the fuel inlet nipple, it should hold a pressure here if the needle is not leaking, if you cannot get a pressure then the needle is leaking, it can be replaced, it will have a rubber tip, also make sure on the metering side of the carb the gasket goes on first followed by the diaphram and cover, the gasket acts as a spacer.
Are you certain the throttle butterfly or slide (depending on what model bike you have) is seated...if the actual throttle in the carb throat is not closing, starting bike cold will be very difficult as you are feeding in too much air.
The big one is the gas line which goes to the petcock.
The smaller one is a vacuum line which also goes to the petcock.
That is a vacuum operated petcock, which works off the vacumm off the intake side of the carb.
the intake side is the engine side, the other side of the carb is airbox side.
There should be a nipple sticking out of the carb on top on the intake side.
If not then the nipple is on the intake boot itself, on top.
The intake boots are on the engine side of the carb and the airbox boots are the opposite side.
CLEAN THROTTLE PLATE HOLD IT OPEN AND CLEAN WITH CARB SPRAY ON A RAG AND IF YOU HAVE AN OLD TOOTHBRUSH THAT WORK GREAT ALSO (THROTTLE PLATE IS WERE THE AIR TUBE FROM THE AIR FILTER GOES) ITS A BUTTERFLY THAT OPEN AND CLOSES WITH THE GAS PEDAL
The mixture screws are at the bottom front of the 2 front barrels. They poke into the barrels from outside the carb.
Butterfly usually refers top the throttle plates that open and close the barrels, but if you have a quadrajet, they may also refer to the upper plates on the back 2 barrels that only open when the throttle is wide open.
The float level is the distance of the top of the float when the float valve is closed. As gas flows into the bowl thru the float valve, the float rises and eventually closes when the proper float level is reached by the gas.
Most of the time when this is happening there is trash in the fuel tank and when the gas gets low the pickup tube sucks it up blocking fuel flow. The tank needs to be cleaned out. When you empty the tank of its gas do not pour it back in the can, you're just dumping dirt in your clean gas. Second cause is the diaphragm in the carb has developed a small tear in it and needs to replaced. Most of the Briggs and Stratton engines on push mowers these days use a small plastic carb with a prime bulb on the side mounted to the gas tank . Rebuild kits are inexpensive costing 3 or 4 dollars and usually include directions that are easy to follow with PICTURES. (Trust me, even I like pictures to help remember how that pesky linkage goes back on) If you are cleaning the tank it is just a few more steps to rebuild the carb so grab a few simple wrenches, a philips screw drive, a can of carb cleaner and go to it. And one last thing. On the carb where it slides on the intake there is an o ring with a plastic washer. Rubber o ring goes next to the carb side and backup washer goes on the engine side. Use a dab of motor oil on the rubber ring to make sure it slides on without binding.
shut it off and pull over so tried restarting it and immediatly it started revving outta control. so i shut it off.(i noticed a lil gas comin outta the far right carb.) the throttle won't snap back but i can force it back and i see the cable moving the butterflys open and shut (to the point where the tension on the throttle cable is released)but it won'd stop the revs. now i can't start it without having to turn it off cause it revs til redline. any ideas on what to look at first??? thanks.That would just continue to let gas go into the carb. Without air getting into the system that's not going to be the issue. So if the butterflys are closed and it's still reving like crazy then it's getting air from somewhere.
Check to make sure all your vaccum lines are hooked up well and that there aren't any cracks in these lines or the carb boots. Make sure the carb boots are tightened well.,,
hi try taking the air filter pipe off the throttle body see if the butterfly spindle has no play in the spindle or the retaining screws that hold it to the spindle have not come loose just put your finger on the butterfly while its idling see if the noise goes if not just pinch the vacuum hose on the vacuum box see if noise goes or changes pitch yates210456
